That list has absolutely no validity whatsoever.

Well, some of these movies haven’t gotten a wide (or even a limited) release yet. I thought the list was pretty safe except for its ignoring the Dark Knight and the inclusion of Speed Racer. The obscure movies selected are all pretty “big” indies: Synecdoche, Milk, Benjamin Button, and Slumdog Millionaire all have big names attached to those projects and most have big name casts.

Why list movies that are actually good, when you can pimip your polictical beliefs?

quote:

4 months, 3 weeks & 2 days

In Romania under the Ceausescu regime, abortion was banned, and within 20 years some half a million women had died from having botched illegal abortions. This severe thriller from writer-director Christian Mungiu focuses on Gabita (Laura Vasiliu), a pregnant college student, and her friend Otilia (Anamaria Marinca), who finds a man who'll do the job: a quietly thuggish fellow who calls himself Mr. Bebe (Vlad Ivanov). Remorseless long takes build the suspense as the young women secure a hotel room and, when Bebe explains how they'll have to pay, question whether it's worth the price. Strap yourself in for this minimalist, splendidly acted horror film — and count your blessings that you live in a country where choosing an abortion doesn't mean losing a life.

quote:

Milk

Affable and driven, Harvey Milk was a San Francisco politician who succeeded by inspiring crowds rather than making backroom deals. The country's first gay city supervisor, he used his energy and intelligence to help homosexuals secure civil rights. This exceptional docudrama — written by Darren Lance Black, directed by Gus Van Sant and starring Sean Penn — covers the last eight years of Milk's life, which ended when he was shot by fellow supervisor Dan White (Josh Brolin). Penn, who’s in nearly every scene, manages the neat trick of merging his star personality with the public figure well known from the 1984 documentary The Life and Times of Harvey Milk. Sunny, pushy and convincingly gay, Penn embodies a man hopeful for the future of his fellows but dreading what he believes is awaiting him. A how-to exercise in marshalling dozens of characters and one big political issue into exemplary, edifying entertainment, Milk is a must-see, right now.

Why bother seeing a movie to decide whether its good and instead just decide it stinks because it doesn’t match your own political beliefs? Hi, pot, it’s me, kettle.

I seem to remember a lot of people were pissed when 4 months, 3 weeks & 2 days didn't win best foreign film last year, so I think it DID come out in 07. Whats up with that? (Just checked IMDB, it did come out in 07).

Also, Speed Racer? Really?

you'd have to see the movie to understand.

I highly recommend it if you are into movies that make you squirm. Although don't watch it if you want something fast-paced. It's a typical slow-moving, european "focus on character development" type of film.

Yes 4 Months was intense and very hard to watch, but it was released for a Oscar run last December. I believe it was actually shot in 2006.

I have no idea how Speed Racer made it on that list, that was one of the worst of the year.

I agree the Dark Knight omission was surprising and though Wall-E is a superb film, it was not the best film of 2008.

I still got a long way too go with watching films until I decide what is the best of 2008.

That is an "Ooh, look how cool and smart I am" list.

Wall-E is at the top of the list for the "OMG he picked a cartoon" factor.

Iron-Man is on there to show that the reviewer is common enough to enjoy an action/superhero movie, but not common enough to pick the movie that was the popular favorite (Dark Knight).

Speed Racer? That's their way of saying, "You're too dumb to realize that this crap was really a great movie."
