Delta removed my upgrade

I have a family trip booked in June. I purchased flights last year (while still Platinum Medallion) and received an upgrade to Comfort+ immediately upon booking. Due to having a baby and other circumstances, we were unable to rollover our medallion status. I happened to be on the Delta app yesterday and noticed my seat assignments for those flights were gone and listed as only Main Cabin. Upon contacting Delta, I was told that since I didn't rollover status, the upgrade had been removed. Has anyone else experienced this? I was assured by several family members and friends that are frequent Delta travelers that as long as you book while you have status, you get the upgrade. Also, why would Delta give the upgrade for a flight in the next year if status had not been attained?

Yeah unfortunately that’s how it works upgrades are based on status at the time of the flight so if your status changes any upgrades associated with that status will change. Annoying one

Delta is unique as they sell Comfort+ as a separate class of service instead of a benefit to frequent flyers (Like United and American do with Economy Plus and Main Cabin Extra).
Because of this, you technically have to "upgrade" into that class of service and, when you lost your status, you essentially got pulled from the upgrade list.
EDIT: From the Delta website;
If you had selected something like an Exit Row "Preferred" Economy seat then the assignment would have stuck, but they just essentially removed you from the upgrade list since DL Platinum Medallion doesn't book straight into C+.

EDIT: From the Delta website;
quote:
As a Platinum Medallion Member, you are eligible for Unlimited Complimentary Upgrades for yourself and a companion to Delta Comfort+® shortly after ticketing, to First Class beginning 120 hours (5 days) prior to departure, and to the domestic Delta One® experience on the day of the departure.
