I think LIV Mayakoba was a success

TLDR; I think a 50% increase in viewership from the US alone is a success when you provide the context that LIV is marketing towards an international audience.
Contrary to the talking points people are making about the Nielsen ratings this past weekend, I wouldn’t say it was a colossal failure. First, some context.
1. Whenever you rely on the CW to broadcast your live sporting event, it’s going to get shite ratings. I don’t think half of this board knows which channel it’s on and the network frequently has no clue how to properly program for a live sporting event (I think they cut away to a re-run of Suits with a playoff between DJ and Cam last year). I think if you placed LIV on a major network, the numbers would significantly improve. LIV has no God given right to be on one of those networks so it’s TBD whether or not you see a huge jump in ratings. I could see FOX or ESPN jump if there’s a big enough draw internationally which brings me to my next point.
2. Tracking US ratings as the only metric to see fan interest in a league that is marketed for an international audience is a little disingenuous. PGA Tour will always be king in the states. But we have no access to see how well this did internationally which I can confidently say would boost the amount of eyeballs on LIV significantly. Plus, a good amount of people (myself included) stream the event through the LIV+ app because it’s commercial free and it has better picture quality than the CW. Until they publish those numbers, all of this is speculation (which I understand the criticism). But that doesn’t take away from the fact that LIV is looking to grow their international presence and look to places like Australia, Asia, Europe and South America to make up for the lack of interest from the states.
With all that said, this weekend was the first time I’ve seen LIV results mentioned on a sports center ticker. The event drew a 50% increase in viewers just from last year. The presence of this league is growing, and will likely surpass most people’s expectations in the next 2-3 years. I think Americans truly underestimate the popularity of professional golf in countries outside the US. And, if they’re smart, they continue in that direction focusing on growth in viewership outside the US. One thing they do have is a great TV product with phenomenal golfers. That can carry you a long way.

Thanks for the new thread on this. It most certainly couldn’t have gone in the thread directly above this currently debating LIV / PGA ratings.
The rest of us are extremely grateful to read another take on this topic.

I agree. I can’t imagine someone who is a fan of Brooks Koepka or Jon Rahm or Bryson Dechambeau or Phil or whoever watching LIV golf & actually thinking it’s not a good product.
I get the complaints about music, or team names/logos, etc but that really has nothing to do with the golf being played.
The biggest complaint is that “it’s too different” which is exactly what they’re going for.

It had just a little to do with the rainout at Pebble.

LIV Golf needs a Fox to get this party started. The amount of star power they are now generating is staggering. With Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton coming over to the dark side makes the league even more intriguing. Even the old NFL/AFL rivalry didn't reflect the amount of talent and brand on the LIV side. They need a national TV power to open the floodgates. It's that simple.

If they could just get FOX or someone to televise their team championship at end of season, it would be huge. Hopefully before football season
If the PIF/PGA merger ever gets done, then we may see that happen pretty quickly.

It just takes a Fox to get it all started.
