I'll start with Linebacker. Do we have one decent LB? I think this position hurt us real bad. Quarterback speaks for itself. Our Defensive Line was MIA. Everybody said that was the strongest position on the team coming in this year. No pass rush equates to no secondary. Coaching especially on defense is very suspect. I'm sorry but we took a giant step backwards this year. I hope this was a fluke year for us. I'm really interested in seeing Les Miles coach his recruits because he inherited a whole lot of talent when he came to LSU. Lets see if he can maintain this program. It's going to be very interesting to see what direction this program goes. I'll be honest I'm not a big fan of Les Miles even after he won the National Championship. I always saw a alot of flaws in his coaching on the field. It seems like he refuses to play the better player. I'm a fan and will always be one, this is just my opinion on the state of LSU FOOTBALL.

90% of people are saying this on here, yet less than 2% actually posted it on the board at the time

I agree the D was underwhelming this year. As a complete amateur with football, it seemed to me the D backfield was confused and clueless all year, and we never generated decent rush on the QB. What was really disturbing was the massive amounts of rushing yds. we gave up, against what was felt to be one of the best D lines around. Perhaps that was due to subpar LB's. My gut feeling is that the larger proportion of problems was COACHING. The personnel were not that different from last year - they just didn't execute very well most of the time. The D's best game was against Bama - even though it was a loss (thanks to JL). It seemed after that game, all morale was gone from the team. I am upbeat that with coaching changes, LSU will be much improved next year. Several young D players will help in the mix. KC.

Although you are entitled to your opinion I can't buy into this KCMO. I have to respectfully disagree.. Please tell me instances in EACH game where Les Miles screwed up. Are you sure it was him? I mean, he couldn't be out there on the field telling JL to "Check Down Dammit" I honestly believe the "Reason For the Season" (pardon my lame Christmas analogy) is #1) inexperienced QB (take your pick) #2) No Defensive leadership #3) No DC leadership...

MENTAL ERRORS - my teacher in hs say she could not drill a hole in my head and pour the knowledge in.

To Prairieville - I did not mean to infer that this was all Miles fault, other that perhaps giving his blessing to the DCD scheme. It is not plain to me whether the problem with the D was players, or the scheme, or both. Basically, I agree with your assessment of the main problem for LSU - inexperienced QB's. The D was not very good this year, for whatever reason - wouldn't you agree? KC.

The players just aren't trusting the scheme. The scheme is sound.

In retrospect we lost a lot on defense. The anchor in the middle of the line. Two linebackers. Two lock down corners. The QB of the defense. We could not make it up. A new DC with a new scheme using the best players on the team available for that scheme would have possibly produced a better result. This is hindsight and we will never know.

I would agree, in part... I personally think it was a shitstorm of numerous collisions.
1) Inexperience at QB (all QB's) - No, this doesn't necessarily make them "bad" QB's
2) Players recruited for their aggressiveness were told to play gap defense...not a good combination
3) No true defensive leader - Beckwith tried, but we all saw how that turned out
4) No leadership or discipline from the dual headed monster
5) Mental mistakes on all parts
6) Les Miles trusting that his unmotivated players would soon find a way to pull themselves up by their bootstraps. These are college kids (young adults). They need discipline and leadership.

I believe the correct changes will be made. That's my hope

PVillePandG, good post. The players are admitting as much after their first bowl practice. Sad, isn't it?

I think this makes judging the performance of any part of the defense rather speculative. None of us have a clue what the players at any or all of the positions were being coached to do, so we don't really know who missed/failed their assignments on any given play. All we really know is that the defense failed to live up to expectations overall, and performed significantly below the level we should have at LSU. Obviously, one way or the other than goes to coaching (either for failing to garner the necessary talent or failure to coach it properly). How far up the coaching tree remains to be seen, but every available bit of evidence points to the rather obvious highest two new names in the equation: Mallory and Peveto.

Once those are sorted out (one way or another), then we can evaluate whether the problem runs even higher. If we have a new DC next year and the defense still sucks, then the problem is likely higher than the DCs. If we keep the same DCs next year and the defense still sucks, then the problem is likely higher than the DCs.

As for the player positions, the most glaring deficiencies appeared to be in the secondary, which also appeared on paper to be our weakest (by virtue of inexperience) position. But, as you pointed out, failures along the DL could easily be responsible for hanging our DBs out to dry, creating the appearance of blown coverages/assignments where none actually existed. So, imo, we just don't know.

Frankly, I'm hoping for a change at DC, and trusting that change to work out the rest of it.
