Are there any Burhalter supporters here still? If so why?

Why do you want Greg to continue as manager?

I don’t think anyone really supports him. Maybe some just blame him less than the rest of us.

Never wanted him as manager and I don’t think he’s good but I will say the team’s shortcomings in this tournament weren’t really his fault

Reappointing him after the WC and Reyna family debacle was such a lame, unambitious, rudderless move.

I would say the weah red card as number 1. But the big issues with Greg are glaring - lack of creativity in system and low chance/expected goal against teams with pulses
Defensive lapses
Low intensity / urgency
Favorite players keep places even if underperforming.
Lack of accountability for bad performance or things like red cards. (Note after barely any red cards in 10+ years we have had quite a few the last 2-3 years)

Who else are we going to get............that can deliver that sweet behind the back bounce pass?

Jürgen Klinsmann was miles better than Gregg Berhalter as a coach both tactically and positionally. JK had the right attitude, mind, and culture fitting for our players to give their all. And he was better at setting up the USMNT for success in the long term whereas Gregg has only set us backwards many years.

Not a Greg supporter and happy to move on, but also perplexed by the crazy expectations of some people. COPA result sucked, but the red card was the most important part of that.
US Soccer talent and depth is much better, but not that good yet to expect we should expect to consistently hang with the big boys. Even if the US hires the best national team coach in the world, a realistic goal for the WC is to get to the knockout stage again, then build on that towards 2030 which might be the last run for a few of the current players.
I do think whoever leads the team after the WC should push for every opportunity outside of WC qualifying to play top 15 teams in the world for experience.

Knockout stage is far too unambitious a goal for 2026, even without the format change.
We’ve made the Round of 16 at every World Cup held outside of Europe since the 90’s. We made it to the round of 16 last time with a younger version of the team we’ll have in 2026 and without home crowds. Anything short of the quarterfinals should be regarded as a massive failure and a wasted opportunity.

Fine, I will say round of 16 with the new format, and hopefully a good draw.
But quarterfinals means you are one of the 8 best (remaining teams) in the tournament. I believe raw talent matters significantly in international soccer. Look at the EURO quarters, US at best would be 7th or 8th most talented team, and I don't see the US jumping any of those teams talent wise by 26 no matter who leads the team.
I root hard for US and am disappointed when they don't play well, but understand our soccer talent and soccer culture limitations. My hope for WC 30 is continued to development of young talent which continues to lift up the overall US talent pool.

Your goal for a home World Cup is to get exactly as far as we got 32 years earlier and before we had a professional soccer league? That is some ambition Gregg could get behind.

Will back track a bit and say quarters is a great goal for 26 not matter who leads the team.
A massive failure would be not getting to knockout stage. Losing in the first knockout round might be a failure. But losing in the round of 16 and not making the quarters would be disappointing in the moment but definitely not a massive failure.

I think a quarterfinal run should be expected, simply because it's a home world cup, but I wouldn't call it a massive failure if we don't reach that.
We're a top 16 team in the world so I think anything below round of 16 would be a failure. We're definitely not a top 8 team, neither in terms of talent or results.
While we are improving as a soccer culture here, it's not as if everyone in front of us has been stagnant, so the idea that we should be expecting quarterfinals because we made the round of 16 in 1994 is kind of a fallacious argument.

We may not be a top 8 team talent wide but we are talented enough to be in that next tier. The tier we are in should be able to be on the field with everyone outside of the top 2-3 countries. Not losing to Panama and playing for a draw even down a man or playing for a draw against Uruguay who should be in our tier.

What is the next tier?
I would say we are a second tier team on the international stage right now. We're definitely not talented enough to be in the top tier yet.

I think you're way off here. No amount of coaching will consistently put us over the top of the talents like Argentina, France, Brazil, England, Spain, Netherlands, Portugal, Uruguay, Germany, Colombia, etc.

I don’t think we’re one of the 8 best teams. I absolutely think we should consider a top 8 finish the floor for what should be considered a success in 2026.
Unless I’m misunderstanding the format, we will be a seeded team in what will certainly be a weak group of 3. We should absolutely expect to win both games and get a favorable round of 32 matchup. Anything short of the Round of 16 would honestly just be embarrassing. Unless we get pretty unlucky with the draw, we should have a pretty winnable game in the round of 16. And in any case, the standards should be raised with an experienced team playing at home.
