Which would you prefer, and why? I will have an extra two days to stay in either of these towns and am having difficulty deciding. I will be there in early December.

If just comparing cities Amsterdam is the much better stay. I found Brussels very dirty and unsafe in certain areas. But if taking day excursions I would choose Brussels. Bruges and Ghent are places to must visit.

I agree Amsterdam is the better city but from Brussels you can get to cool cities in about 30-40 minutes on the train. I will add Antwerp is my favorite city in Belgium. It used to be Ghent but Antwerp unseated it after our stay there last summer. Either way, be prepared for cold, rainy weather.

I spent a few months mostly at the Renaissance at Rue de Parnasse 19 (I think it was branded differently when I stayed there). It's maybe 1/8th of a mile (end of the block) from a major train station. The Christmas market is less than a 1/2 mile away, and there's a shopping area that is also walkable where you can buy Leonidas chocolate, etc. The Christmas period is pretty nice there. You can walk to almost anything from there. If you're taking the subway (actually farther away than the big station) do NOT get off at the Merode station, for any reason, at any time of day.
Also near the hotel is a plaza area with a bunch of bars and cafes (search for a bar called "London Calling" to find it, there are also two similar plazas within walking distance.) The bus to the airport, if you need it, is right next to the train station. Very convenient for side trips.
I would actually take the bus to the airport to rent a car when I needed to. I was bound and determined to hit every WWI/WWII spot I could (Passchendaele, etc.) One bad thing about Belgium is that having road signs in French and Flemish caused me brain short circuits at 100kph trying to figure out which was one was the French one. Do *not* speed in NL. Why I got tickets when there were people blowing by me at the speed cameras, I don't know.
Not including taxiing and trying to get the rental car, I spent just long enough in NL to drive my happy arse to a meeting in Brussels, and not much more.

Really depends what you want to do. I found Brussels awesome as a change of pace walk around and drink and eat. Can also get to bruge/ghent easily. Amsterdam definitely has a lot more "other" stuff to do. Loved both.
