Freezer went out, caught it at the point where everything has thawed but still cool. Placing a thermometer on it and external temp is around 54 degrees.

Can I refreeze or am I going to be cooking 50 pounds of deer meat tonight?

Happened to me last summer. Like you, I caught everything while it was still cool and refroze it. Haven't had any issues.

Also, immediately ordered a wifi freezer temp sensor. I set what temp I want to be my "alarm" threshold, and it'll send an alert to my phone if the temp gets to that point. WELL worth not losing a whole chest freezer of venison.

Is it vac sealed or just in ziplock or butcher paper? How long was it at 54 degrees? Depending on how it was processed and how clean the processing was it could potentially have dangerous bacteria.

(Full disclosure, I personally would refreeze it unless I had someone in the house that had a medical condition)

I'd refreeze but I'd make a point of cooking it to 160. So unfortunately no med-rar backstrap. Basically would mean grind into burger or stew or roast.

If it’s vacuum sealed, refreeze it

Yeah it’ll be fine. We humans are fragile but we aren’t that fragile.

My MIL drives me nuts with throwing out good food. She thinks it becomes instantly deadly. She once threw out table salt bc it was expired.

Thank you for this, bootlegger. I’ll be ordering one today.

It's already saved my arse once. Apparently myself or my 5 yr old didn't shut the upright freezer all the way several months ago. Just after midnight my phone started beeping with an alert that the freezer was over 25 degrees. Got up, shut it fully and went back to bed. Worth it!

Have had similar issues with my kids. Had an old upright that was on its last legs, and you had to make sure you closed it all the way, or it wouldn’t seal. Eventually replaced it with a chest freezer, but they still manage to leave it cracked open.

Got into it with my mil for going through my kitchen and chunking anything that had or was close to expiration date.

Refreeze or use it. Might consider cooking and freezing. Refreezing can change the flavor or quality a little but usually not noticeably.

That, or lower temps for longer times will accomplish the same thing. Vacuum packed meat briefly in the danger zone isn't going to combust into a meat-sack of bacteria. It's all a numbers game.

Good luck convincing most women of this, however.

Yolink saved me from my wife leaving a freezer door open just last week.

Of course not. Salt is a mineral, basically an edible rock. But everything, even salt, is dated by the manufacturer for whatever reason and she mindlessly adheres to dates. Salt lasts forever. As does honey, although it will crystallize it doesn’t go bad.

I’ll admit, I do enjoy going through my pantry and tossing old shite. But this is old expired shite that really does expire.
