I played on some on a friend's guitar, man they played really nice and seemed to be a lower tension?

just put some 12/53s on my Taylor a couple of weeks ago. I like them a lot.

I have XS 12-53 on my Martin right now.
You shouldn't feel a tension difference. XS and XT are the same D'Addario phosphor bronze or 80/20 strings as normal, but with string-life-extending coatings. I personally prefer XTs for tone. XSs are quieter in regard to finger noise.
Why? From D'Addario's FAQ articles
XT and XS are coated using two different methods. Because of that, XT strings last longer than standard non-coated strings, and XS strings last longer than XT. Each string satisfies a particular need in the market.
XT is made with a treated wrap wire, which results in an extended lifespan over similar non-treated strings, as well as a natural feel. XT has replaced our successful EXP line as an excellent coated option
XS is coated using an ultra-thin premium film coating which generally lasts even longer, for maximum string life and a smoother feel.

He had them on a Taylor 914 CE with a really close setup, really nice guitar. Maybe that was the difference.
I was playing my parlor guitar with Elixirs on it and was comparing to that. It has a nice setup too.
I really liked those strings though. I will be putting a set on the parlor soon.
