I’m sure this has been asked before but, I need a league debate settled. I’m the commissioner and the topic came up of benching a defense win you are leading the matchup late to secure the win in case they put up negative points. I said of course you cannot do that, as it is playing scared and not believing in the defense that you initially chose to play. A few of the members felt that they should be able to do it because it’s a smart play. We’ve had many conversations about how everyone has to set a lineup regardless of how the season goes, and they all agreed with that, but not for this situation. I want to know how y’all feel about this

It’s 100% the correct play to bench the defense.

Seems like you got your answer.

Suggestion for now if people are bitching is take it to a vote and go live with it next week.

Youre both right.

It is playing scared and is 100% within the rules

If there was no agreed upon rule prior to the season starting and the app/website allows it, it should be legal.

As commissioner, you should put it up for a vote and move forward with the voting result starting week 2 through the rest of the season.

It was discussed vaguely last year on championship week. One manager mentioned he was going to do it in the group chat and I mentioned that I thought it was a chicken shite way to play so he left his D in and still won easily. No one objected the idea then. I guess they didn’t care since they weren’t playing anymore, but they had their chance to revoke then

I’m in one league that fines people for not starting a complete lineup, including starting someone who is out (unless it is last minute) or on bye.

It was implemented to keep people from disappearing after they are eliminated, but also helps with this situation.

Any rule is fine as long as it is implemented prior to the season. If there’s no rule, smart players don’t play a defense in that situation.

Theoretically it could come back to bite you.

If the defense plays well and you took the 0, you could lose a tiebreaker at the end of the season.

We do 2 W/L a week so you’re always chasing points unless you have a ton already

Absolutely should be able to bench your defense.

I prefer to just play in a league without kickers or defenses though.

ETA: kickers and defense add too much variability to scoring, IMO.

If your league settings allow for it, then you have to let it happen, IMO.

If you want to make an official "ruling" on it, put it up for vote, if the vote says that you have to start a defense then you should change the settings to match that. What's chicken shite is changing rules in the middle of a week of games.

Absolutely. Not only is it playing scared but it's pretty rare for a defense to get negative points, at least it should be for any defense worth having on your roster. To add to this discussion, you need EVERY point you can get for playoff tiebreakers. I can't tell yall how many times I've made the playoffs by less than 5 points. It's been 3 times alone by less than 1 point. Always put your best roster out there.

I've lost two championships by one point and one by tiebreaker.
But all my leagues lock lineups at noon Sunday.
