Honda CRF50 carb question

I’ve got an older CRF50 that the kids have outgrown and I am going to sell. Wouldn’t crank and hadn’t had a tank of gas run thru it in a couple years. I also noticed gas leaking from the carb drain. I replaced gas and disassembled, cleaned carburetor. Got it to crank right up but gas still comes out of the carb overflow when the fuel valve is on RES. What would cause this?

Sounds like the float valve may be stuck open…

This.
If the carb sat dry for a period of time, the little rubber plunger is likely hard as a rock and froze up.

Those things are notorious for needing replacement on the 50 carb.

Change the float valve if you didn’t. If the float seat looks tarnished polish it with a non abrasive polish/cue tip or a match stick. Just want to clean it up enough to shine.

The cheap Chinese carbs on ebay/Amazon work fine.

Are you talking about the white plastic ring or the tiny little needle valve that the plastic piece moves up and down?
All that seemed to be moving up and down freely when I reassembled.

Pretty sure he's talking about the hole that the needle valve slides up into. I had 2 four wheelers doing the same thing since last deer season. I put a little Mother's polish on a Q tip and put the Q tip in a drill and polished them real well. Both stopped leaking. Got the tip from Cypressknee to try it.

Seriously, just order a new carb from amazon. Probably less than $20.
Your problem is with the needle valve.
And remove/flush the fuel line from the tank to the carb. All sorts of dried stuff is likely in the line on both sides of the fuel filter. Doesn't take but a speck to make that needle valve leak.

Just ordered one.
Got some fresh gas today. Cranked first kick, no leak, but when I’d rev it, it would stay at high rpm after I let off the throttle. Something new every time.

If you replaced the carb, the throttle cable may be binding or rusted. Try revving it from the carb, not the throttle.

My post was confusing. The issues I’m having are still with the original carb. I ordered the new one as a result.

I find the chinese carbs to be pretty crap. If you aren't big bore, I always stick with the OEM carb.
Have you bought a rebuild kit and replaced all the seals. With the pilot jet, I wouldn't advise removing it, just clean that section well and make sure the jet is clear.
You need to make sure the float valve is moving freely and make sure you replace this part.
This is a good video for a rebuild, but your RPMs staying high sounds like you got a few issues with this carb and would do a rebuild and clean up everything you keep on it.
