Last spring we had a black snake in the garage and it smelled like fresh dung for a few days before i got rid of him.

Fast forward to last weekend and my laundry room, just off the garage, has the same smell. I cannot find a dog turd any where and it's a small room. I have also checked all the boxes and under the washer and dryer.

Is there a black snake in a tiny hold behind a cabinet? I figure if so he's got to leave sooner or later as there are no known rodents or food in the house.

Thoughts? I appreciate rodent-eating snakes, just don't like the smell.

I have heard that cottonmouths stink.
Hope that is not your source of stink.

Holy cow I have a toddler and dogs, not what I was hoping to hear but htanks for the input. I just set a trap (rigid minnow trap from best buy with an egg in it). I've caught a few in the past that way, hope its just a hidden toddler diaper that fell somewhere i can't find...

Well, this thread is concerning. My wife and I are hoping to buy acreage with our next house. Even though she's a city girl, she really wants chickens, fruit trees, a garden, etc. She knows she's going to have to deal with critters and bugs, but the first time she finds a snake in her cabinets, she's going to make me sell the house.

It seems like you're telling me snakes in the house are a common occurrence for you. My family had a few acres growing up, and we saw plenty of snakes in the yard, but never one in the house. I've been living in cities and suburbia since college, and was hoping to get back to a slower pace.

ETA- Cottonmouth are known for a funky smell, but they're not the only ones. There are some non-venomous snakes that emit a bad odor as well.

Snakes don't smell like dog crap or baby diapers, I'm confused on why the possibilities are so crazy?

Dead animals tend to smell like rotten meat, if you throw something like an old steak in the trash can that's what a dead rat or snake or whatever tends to smell like. Not really the same as a diaper or dog shite.

Our washing machine will sometimes stink to holy helll. Super hot water and bleach and I scrub the top and under the rim to mitigate that.

I had a black snake living in a box in my garage for a few days and it smelled like a hot steamer of crap. LIke my dog had explosive diahrea in that corner. The minute I found him and he left, the smell went away. He was in there eating the house sparrows that nested on a shelf.

I don't mind black snakes as they eat rattlers and rodents, plus house sparrows are a nuisance according to an expert I know. He can have them and I won't try to hurt him.

I don't care if they're in the garage eating vermin. Just would prefer them not to be in the finished living area unless it's a surgical strike on a roden population, and then get out asap.

Well its time to fess up for a complete dumbass moment. There is no snake in my laundry room. There is no stray turd or soiled diaper.

Last week at the grocery store I was dealing with a handful of foodstuffs, a toddler, and trying to communicate with the grocery employee. I had a sample of food and stuck it in my raincoat pocket and immediately realized it was a bad idea but what else are you going to do, drop your kid and snarf down the food???

Wife calls yesterday and says the reason the laundry room smells is the pocket on my raincoat. "what could be in there???" she asks, thinking its a mouse crawled in there to die or something.

Nope, my dumbass left a snack in there 7-10 days ago. Feel like such an idiot.
