Thoughts on a 90's Fender P Bass Lyte?

A friend of a friend has one and I recently had the opportunity to play it and I came away extremely impressed. Great tone, the active pickups weren't overly sharp like some can be and the neck felt lighting fast.
There's a few available online in the $500 to $700 range and I'm seriously considering picking one up.

Grab 1 before they gone!
Really, when you find something that you really like, especially older items, go on and get them, because other people will be finding out about them too and the prices will be going up.

The one I'm looking at has the violin burst finish like the one in that pic. I can't stop thinking about how great the neck felt on the one I played and the weight was great as well (I'm not getting any younger) so I'm 90 percent sure I'm going to pull the trigger by the end of the week.
Just wanted to see if anyone had any horror stories or if there's some kind of hidden design flaw I'm not aware of.

Used to see those around a lot in the 90’s to early 2000’s. Seems they had a decent rep. If it feels and plays well, I’d jump on it. You could always swap out the pickups and/or preamp if you feel like the tone needs improvement.
I just recently bought a cool late 80’s MIJ/MIA Charvel 2B PJ for like $300. Always wanted one of those old pointy headstock hair metal basses. Old dude I got it from has had it in his home studio for over 30 years and it’s in wonderful shape. Sounds pretty good too with the stock pickups, but as they did back in the day, I’m about to drop some EMGs into it.
There are a lot of really good deals out there on killer old gear.
Only advice I’d give is play it first if you’re able to, especially with a 30-year old instrument. But at a good price it might be worth taking a chance getting online.

If you are really wanting one, I know where to get one in this exact color for a killer deal, less than what you listed. It may need the preamp or electronics looked at.

That Charvel is gorgeous.

I played one for several years in a church orchestra. It played great and had a good tone. The only thing I learned to watch out for was the battery. When it’s done the bass sounds like it is going thru a Silvertone with a 6” speaker. I would buy it.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm definitely getting it unless someone chimes in here with something I haven't considered.

In the past I had a few basses with preamps and when the battery would go, they would just go silent.
I had one of my current basses with preamp out at a gig a few years ago. Had it about 9 months and had not changed the batteries (18v). Did soundcheck and the bass had the craziest sounding distortion ever. It was so weird and I could not figure out what was going on. Sure enough, finally thought about batteries, changed them and it was good to go. I’ve never heard any amp or pedal that could make a distortion sound like that.
