I hated scary movies as a kid, but I remember when this came out I had lightened up to them a bit. And so I rented this one without really having seen much of the NoES series. And I liked this one a lot. I thought it was really good.
And like you said, it sort of ushered us into the more meta type of horror that he 'basically perfected with Scream.
