quote:

A Virginia man tragically died after being struck by a bear that fell from a tree during a hunting trip, according to state wildlife officials.

Lester C. Harvey Jr., 58, of Phenix, Virginia, was standing roughly 10 feet from the base of the tree when the incident occurred, according to the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources.

The bear had been chased up the tree by a group of hunters. As the hunters retreated from the area, one of them shot the animal, causing it to fall.

The falling bear struck Harvey, inflicting injuries that ultimately proved fatal.

Maybe, but you don’t have to tempt fate by putting yourself in a bad spot.

No doubt. The bear didn’t kill him as much as lack of communication with his fellow hunters did.

Hunter 1 - I've got a good shot"

Hunter 2 - " I see him, I'm standing under the tree"

Hunter 1 - "I think you should move. Have you heard about gravity?"

Hunter 2 - "I'm good, take him"

Not so sure it was communication or just a case of the dumbass. Probably mostly dumbass.

A guy that lives a few miles from me travels from Ms to hunt with that group every year. He has been hunting with Mr Lester for years and was basically family. He's pretty tore up about watching it happen. From what I gathered the bear jumped when shot and he couldn't move fast enough. It actually put him in a paralyzed state living on a ventilator and only responding through blinks. They asked if he wanted to live like that and he signaled no. The hunting group all said they would have been less hurt if it would have been an instant death instead of the suffering. At least he wouldn't have been in pain and would have gone out doing what he pretty much lived for.
