My wife and I have no children, but need to get a will in place so the state does not get half. No trusts involved and we have an executor in mind. Seems like it would be a simple document to put together; just do not want to print something off the web and have it notarized. How much should I expect to pay an atty. to handle it? Thanks

I'm at a loss. Has Louisiana drastically changed its intestancy laws in the past two years?

I can't imagine such law being in place, even there.

Without knowing the first thing about AL law, I'd bet a million dollars that the state doesn't take a 50% cut of an intestate estate.

And if you're talking about the "DEATH TAX" than a) it almost certainly won't affect you and b) having a will won't help.

And to answer your question, I don't know what the going rate for a T&E lawyer in Birmingham is, but what you're describing is a simple will that should not be that expensive at all.

ETA: Well, inexpensive relative to other things a lawyer does.

in your case you don't need a lawyer - a seasoned notary will do-

here is one we used years ago - 1/2 the cost of attny and just as legal

you need a simple will

Yeah that might not work in Alabama. I would doublecheck before trying to use notary there.

QUICKEN? it is a piece of software. Hand written wills can be legal in all 50 states if witnessed and notarized

See a notary or call an attorney who will charge you $300 to do a simple will- notary will use the same will and charge half

If your company has a legal plan benefit, you can sign up at open enrollment, get your will done during the year and then cancel the legal plan at your next open enrollment.
