Anyone up for a snipe hunt tomorrow?
Got a few fields to check out 45 mins west of Katy.

Nice!
Found a few this morning. No, that is not a burqa.

Nice! Used to hunt them in my parents front pasture in Beaumont.

Awesome. We don't have snipe in my neck of the woods but we do have woodcock if you know where to find them and they are delicious.
It's my understanding that snipe and woodcock hunting is essentially the same

I guess that depends how you hunt woodcock.
My understanding is that a dog can’t point a snipe. It’s just pass shooting, correct?
Woodcock are incredible dog training birds. They hold really tight and are very forgiving to dog error.

I can confirm they often hold. My springer would sometimes nab them when they wouldn't flush. I've never hunted with a pointer but I could see how they would be great for teaching.
When the woodcock flush they usually do the zig zag flight pattern which is what I've always been told snipe do.

True Story:
Many years ago we were hunting wood ducks in a flooded cutover bottom.
Right before dark the snipe started coming in, over tree top high, then would dive straight down to land.
I shot a full box of 12 gauge shells at them and never knocked a feather off of one.
My buddies got a big laugh at it

Sure they weren’t woodcock?

Woodcock like to fly after LST…so I have heard.

No...woodcock hold. I've never hunted snipe as we dont have them here. Was wondering the differences since I've heard they are such similar birds.
When I was a teenager I mistakenly thought our woodcock were snipe. I was trying to figure out what the weird birds were pre internet. I wound up shooting one with a bb gun and an old guy told me what it was.
Up in the mountains a woodcock is about the strangest and exciting bird a kid could find. There will be clusters of them in the water logged valleys between ridges.
