Explain HD antennas like I’m a child.

I want to cancel YoutubeTv, but I still want to be able to watch the major networks and I don’t want to miss college football games. And I have pretty much all of the streaming services. Will I miss much next fall?

Antennaweb.org I believe is the one where you put in your address and if you're going to install it in your attic or on a pole.
Just like a regular antenna but you may have to point it in a particular direction to get the best signal or buy a multidirectional one.
FYI we've moved since I set up my ultimate antenna but my old house picked up over 100 stations and about 40% were HD.
The site above should give you a good read on what stations you'll be expected to see.
I had a huge thread on the tech board years ago with pics where I documented the whole process.

Amazon
I bought one of these and placed it in my attic. Bought a signal amplifier as well.
I then plugged it directly into the coax cables that are run to each room of the house. Now each room has HD TV programming
Hosted a SB Party using the antenna. Ran like a champ and was 30 secs ahead of the Hulu stream I was running along side
There’s an app that helps you point the antenna towards the strongest signal
Have not missed a saints game or major NFL game. Same for college
Only challenge is the MLB playoffs bc many are broadcast on non major outlets

According to the site you linked, I'll need an antenna like Tigeralum2008 got, or an outdoor one to get all of the channels near me. I'm in Ruston. The 'local' stations are in West Monroe, Monroe and El Dorado, AR. I may try an outdoor one to see if I can pick up Shreveport stations too.

I got to ask.. how old are you?

You can buy an antenna at some Walgreens. Usually there’s an app that’s lets you know where to point. You’ll get all the major networks….and plenty of Walker Texas Ranger and Law & Order

I have an old antenna from the '70s up in my attic. It still works just fine to pick up over-the-air channels.

quote:I had an inside one at my house when I tried to go without cable in the early 2000's.Living in Dallas, I got like 30 channels. Ion had the reruns of all of the CBS crime shows. I watched what seemed like three or four seasons of Criminal Minds and NCIS during those months.

A third of the channels I got were in Spanish.I watched some of those game shows without knowing what was said.

There is no such thing as an HD antenna. There are only antennas. If you live near the transmission towers an indoor or attic antenna will work. Otherwise you’ll need an outdoor antenna on a pole or roof. If you have a long cable run from the antenna to your tv or receiver you’ll need a preamp.
45 miles from the Birmingham towers, 30 ft pole, nice yagi antenna and preamp, I get 71 channels, including atsc 3.0 channels.
I highly suggest watching videos by The Antenna Man on YouTube. Guy has all the info you need to properly install an antenna.

Well if you like college sports you aren’t going to receive any ESPN channels over the airways with an antenna. Also won’t get any main cable channels like History, Discovery, AMC, etc unfortunately.

An antenna is the way to go to get NBC, ABC, Fox, and CBS. Especially for watching sports. You can get the signal minutes faster than streaming and that's not an exaggeration, even faster than cable.
If you live near a major metro area all you need is one of those cheap ones from a place like home depot. I hide it behind the TV and it picks up the big four easily plus countless random channels, H&I being a favorite. Someone else mentioned Ruston. When I lived in Monroe I could pick up ABC and Fox easy but getting NBC and CBS was a bitch. You need a better setup for that, as mentioned.
