At Cane river last weekend and put a small bluegill retrieved from a bass belly on a pole and tossed it out over night. This 29lber was on it when we went check. The lower jaw was missing a sizable chunk but that did not seem to alter his ability to feed.

Hairlip

Seriously was probably caught on a set hook or trot line no one ran and his lip rotted off.

May have been gifted a crossbow and picked up a stage 4 meth addiction that fricked his grill all up.

Most likely a bacterial disease or fungus. Columnaris is a common disease in catfish that we deal with, and it usually starts around the mouth and can rot away sections of the fish. I’ve seen fish with nothing left behind the dorsal fin but bone and fin and somehow still alive. It’s common during spring and fall when water temps swing wildly from warm to cool around 65-80 degrees. If the fish survives, it can have missing chunks like the one you caught.

Or a yo-yo. Real fishermen check their gear daily and pick it it up when done..
