That's a style I've never spent much time on, so I'm not very good at playing that way.
Lately, I've been wanting to learn more of that style.
Any suggestions as to scales I should concentrate on?
Ideal guitar/amp to use? Any suggestions are appreciated.

Haven't watched that in a long time. There was some cool guitar in it though.

I have a Squier classic vibe 60s mustang. I really like it. I wish the trem was better.

Yeah, love surf guitar. Get you a good clean amp with a spring reverb and crank the reverb.

Surfey Bear makes a great "pedal" with a true spring reverb.

Of course, you need a Fender Strat or Jaguar.

Dick Dale is the king of surf rock. Plenty of youtube videos out there teaching the classic surf rock licks.

Yes. My bud and I play about half surf rock.

I can't speak to playing lead, but the key to rhythm is palm muting the low E and A strings to get the drippy surf sound which fuels most of the songs. For me personally a Jazzmaster has a bridge that's very conducive for muting compared to my Stratocaster.

With the amp, I have a Fender Mustang modeling amp and downloaded a couple of surf tones and the primary difference I hear between them and Fender clean is more echo on surf. How that's achieved with tube amps, I'm not sure. My buddy gets great surf tones through his Fender Twin tube amp.

We're having a world of fun playing, that's for sure. Here's my latest favorite surf band...

There are a couple of original surf rock bands that play around the Coast--one from NOLA and another from Ocean Springs. Ultraniche genre, but it has some dedicated fans.

You also have Rondo Hatten in BR, but they rarely play anymore.

Auggie, I get a great surf sound with my old strat played clean thru my super reverb. I just crank up the reverb. Make sure your whammy bar is good and tight.

Not really looking to do a lot of surf music but I have a couple of songs I'm working on, that could use some good surf style licks thrown in.
I wish I knew a good surf picker around here, but I don't. So, I've got to try and do it myself.

Here's a great surf song which shows you the lead and kind of rhythm I was talking about.

Rick Miller from Southern Culture on the Skids is a great surf guitarist, and they are a great band to see live.

I don't have a Fender Tube amp, been meaning to get one, but also need to spend money in other directions. So that went on the back burner.
I have a Crate tube amp with spring reverb that sounds OK and several Fender solid state amps.
Not really trying to make records, just demos for songs. I just like to get the ideas across as well as possible.

I was wanting one of those Danelectro guitars for a while, but I kind of forgot about it. Now I remember why I wanted one. They are a really good band with a cool sound and act.
Watched some interviews with the guitar player, he seems like an awesome guy.
That chick bass player is killer. They've got a new fan.

Saw the Bruiser Broussard Trio is playing Fools Fest in Covington in a couple weeks. I've seen them and they play surf. That's the extent of my surf knowledge.

I was a big Junior Brown fan back through 90s. After a while it kind of wore thin though.
