Hi all. A few years ago, I went to Destin and fished a double pomp rig with fish bites in the surf and didn't catch anything until my last cast on the last day, I actually doubled up on ladyfish.

Was it just bad luck, or are there better places/techniques to fishing from shore in Destin? I'm booked there again in September this year.

Also, I have zero interest in shark.

Whiting/Trout/weakfish/flounder/redfish/pompano/crevalle are all on the menu.

I have done what you describe around the same time of year and caught whiting on about every cast, some pretty decent numbers of pompano and enough ladyfish and hardheads to last a lifetime. Sometimes you can't hide behind a tree and bait a hook for the whiting being so aggressive but sometimes over a 3-4 day period I have come away almost skunked. Almost always catch some whiting though. I do tip the fish bites with some FRESH shrimp...if its been thawed and frozed a bunch...most bait shrimp has...it just washes off the hook but a small pinch of a shrimp that was alive when you pinched him is pretty tough and attracts fish better than the fish bites alone, in my opinion...and when they knock the shrimp off they have found the fish bites which are hard to get off.

Water quality is key as is wind and current of course. I have been to PCB when it was common to catch kingfish off the beach but I have also been a week or two after a heavy rain fall and the water looked like the South Carolina coast and there was nothing in it...not even hardheads.

Finding a break in the first bar that leads to the second ditch is my favorite place to set up.....I will fish hard up against the beach in the first ditch...just past the first shelf and then on both sides of the break. I never do it often enough but letting a bait soak is a bad idea unless catching fish ain't your goal...move them around until you find them, they are almost always there unless the water quality is lousy,,,,

When all else fails, start chunking a chartreuse/ black back rattle trap. You’ll catch something within 2 dozen casts.

And free. My kid got addicted to surf fishing and got a scoop for this. All the bait you need. He has fish bites, too, which also work.

Walk out to the west jetty when the tide is just starting to move out. Put a live shrimp on your hook and cast it anywhere you see moving water.

Hold on tight.

I fished the jetties in East Pass a lot when I was a kid in the 80's, very quick bites but always catfish. The dangerous kind and not-good-eating kind. You know the kind. The ones that you catch at the jetties in East Pass.

Fish the edges of the rip currents, places where bait is going to naturally settle is where the predators will be. Don’t commit to one spot. You have to be willing to be mobile in surf fishing

If you can get up early a big top water in the surf will get plenty of action from blue fish, possible red or trout, lady fish

But who wants to get up early on vacation right

We always catch sand fleas on the beach and put them on a Carolina rig, the pomps love them.

Heading that way today for a week long vacation with the family. Definitely doing the top water and spoon early morning to see what’s biting.
