People who say LSU is a "football school"

Why can it not be like Florida at Texas and have loyal fan support for football and basketball and compete on the highest level of each? Do fans not want this? Can't we be great at the two most popular sports in collegiate athletics? Will LSU fans ever care enough to get basketball to that level or are they content?

If we go on a consistent run of really good years like the 80's and early 90's, it will happen. I remeber when Shaq was playing for LSU and the footbal team stunk. LSU basketball was much more nationally recognized than football.
I think that Brady being canned two years removed from a Final Four is proof that LSU and the fans are not content with a mediocre basketball program.

Good Point but personally, I just dont like BB and I find it very hard to support a sport that doesnt interest me!!!

I think with the right coaching staff, LSU can be both. There is enought basketball talent in the neighboring states to be successful. Hell Trent Johnson was successful at stanford. He has got to make a dent in the SEC with LSU. I believe in him.

Those other football schools? Everyone wants to win everything. But when it comes down to it, football is everyone's first choice outside of a handful of basketball schools.
That said my order of sports I want to win
football > baseball > track > basketball

quote:Successful basketball teams do not equal a "basketball school." Make no mistake, Florida and Texas are absolutely, 100% football schools. They have been fortunate/wise/whatever enough to also field very successful basketball teams, which has made those teams very popular with the fan base. But 99.999% of those fans at the Gator and Longhorn Basketball games would drop those programs in a heartbeat to save their football teams. As would their administrations.

If LSU can get a coach as successful as Billy Donovan, we will sell out the PMAC on a regular basis with awesome crowds. If Florida gets a coach as mediocre as John Brady, their arena will revert to half-full (on a good night).

Plus those schools have enrollments near 50,000 each. Add that to the alumni base, you have a lot of BB fans.

You are showing your youth.

Good point. But I think Brady's attitude pushed a large amount of the fanbase away from LSU. A loyal fanbase that showed up for Dale Browns underachieving tiger cagers.

Basketball attendence is a little different than football game attendence. People come from all over the state and the country to see football games. Basketball and baseball games are mostly attended by the local populous and students.

If Coach Johnson turns this program into a perennial tourney team and one of the tops in the SEC, you and every other fan that isn't interested in basketball will be singing a different tune. Everyone loves a winner and wants to associate with one.
How many were interested in baseball before they started winning?

If LSU were as successful in basketball as they are in football and played only once a week, it would be the same.

LSU supported both very well when I was at LSU and in fact, baseball became a hit then, so LSU supported the three sports.
LSU basketball is coming back but John Brady damaged support while he was coach. It seems like the new coach has the program going in the right direction and is starting to get the support from the community.

I've never thought of it that way, but you are right, as the two games per week/midweek home game travel issue is a factor, as is the win percentage angle..
LSU Hoops packed 'em in for the 26 game win streak in 1980, CJ, Shaq,etc..eras, and Tigerstadium had plenty of empty seats during the Hallman era..
Winning and having home Saturday games make a huge difference in whether packing the place.
Outside of Dale Brown's late seventies to early nineties, LSU Hoops has lacked the consistency in recruiting, identity, and year-to-year expectations, that are necessary to build and sustain the fanbase and pack the PMAC.
Brady alienated many fans, while Coach Johnson's personality, team MO, and new direction is quickly turning that around.
I'm very optimistic about LSU Hoops future once again.

Very true! All LSU fans want is a winner. Look at baseball and the last few years of Smoke and Maneri's first year.....attendance was horrible. Basketball gets back to a winning record every year and the fans will come back.
You can have it both ways.

Florida has won two of the last three national titles in Football and Hoops.
