My neurosurgeon suggested gabapentin as an option for relief of back pain.
What info can any board members give me on if it helped them and what kind of side effects it has?

Band aid. Won't fix anything but it'll help mask nerve pain. I guess if the pain relief leads to better sleep or allows you to do more in PT then that would have benefits

I was on it for my herniated disk pressing on my sciatic nerve. I got up to 300mg 3 times per day. I don’t take it anymore, but just know, if you start it, do not stop it cold turkey. I did this and felt like complete shite for days. Apparently, dropping it suddenly can give you withdraw symptoms.
ETA: it did help me get better sleep, but my pain eventually went away on its own and I didn’t need it anymore.

I was prescribed it for ulnar nerve pain 20 years ago, brought on by heavy DB pullovers and sleeping in a position that put too much pressure on my ulnar nerve. I stopped sleeping in that position, and gabapentin had no apparent impact.

I've had the best luck with Celebrex for mine. Also given Lyrica by my MD which I didn't notice much with. Diet and exercise and my discs have healed a good bit. I would try Celebrex before Gaba

Life saver for me with prostate pain. Eliminated it completely. I had no side effects. Not even sleepiness. 300mg 3 times a day.

Yes, the radiology report also states that it has improved compared to previous.

I was in severe pain for about 2 months with a back injury. It definitely helped until I was able to get an injection to correct the problem.
