Steam selling ALPHA phase "early access". Anyone bite the bullet? I know the game has been in development forever, but not sure I know more than that.

$50 for alpha access seems steep. I've also been reading they aren't even close to halfway done after all these years. That much money for a game that could potentially never be finished is wild to me.

They're like star citizen. They do a sale every time the funds run out. Will be in alpha for another 10 years.

I caved and finally jumped in. I've had my eye on this one for awhile and almost got it at a higher price point. Being on steam now and at the same price as a WoW expansion I figured why not.


Trying to keep my review brief because there is a lot to say. I'd say if you are going in and wanting anything close to a complete MMO experience just wait it our for a couple more years. If you are willing to deal with a very bare bones feature status and enjoy the budding community it's not so bad.

The main quest line ends at level 8 and your max is level 25 in the current version. So after the quests end its a big open sandbox. Crafting, mob grinding, repeatable commission missions, and crate running between towns are your main gameplay loops.

Right now most of the content comes from the community. Cities can go to war with one another, and little rivalries form between towns/guilds. There is PVP but it's mostly ganking and not real gameplay based fights yet.


TL;DR

Come in with a mindset that you are a tester, and getting a very early MMO experience that is very grindy, but has a fun and plentiful community and you'll have a good time.

Looking for a polished exp, wait it out a bit

I jumped in a few months back. The very first hour or so is decent at teaching you the basics of the game, but after that it becomes a bit more loose with quests which can't be finished, difficulty in finding vendors, a lack of depth in explaining citizenship options (and a cost of maintaining it that's prohibitive unless you play a LOT and/or are in a guild), little in the way of explaining progression paths, etc.

There's potential there, but it has a long way to go.

Well the thing is that it's probably one of the most difficult genres to break into Indie studios like the Ashes of Creation devs are just setting themselves up for failure.

Beyond that, I would say that almost every MMORPG released in the late 00s early 2010s boom period essentially had the exact same issues.

1) Using an unwieldy game engine that did not run well on most PCs of its day.
2) Polishing the frick out of the early game experience and ignoring the endgame
3) Slapping an established IP on top of copy/paste World of Warcraft mechanics

Looks like they took the 7 mil profit from steam early access and ran. Maybe one day people will stop giving these people money for incomplete product.

He and his husband (big shock) were the only two people listed on " the board" he claims waa makinf decisions he couldnt agree with.

There is going to be some juicy drama that comes of this. Early accusations are that the game released on early access at a normal price point just to be able that the game was released and attempt to avoid some of the most serious legal issues

TL;DW - Most MMO players are looking for community, most MMO developers are looking to make a game. This becomes important when looking at new MMO's because it sets the foundation for his hypothesis that people flocking to these new and untested MMOs are doing so because they want that feeling of being on the ground floor of the community instead of the person showing up well after the hype and hooplah of beta, EA, etc and then learning the game after a majority of the community has progressed out of the newbie stage.

That is basically a long way around just saying that gamers are attracted to the shiny new toy.

The best time to get into any multiplayer game is at release.

None of that matters in the long run though if the game is feature incomplete and has no content.
