College football transfer portal

In 2024 it saw 3300 entries, 2025 4100 and early reports show 2026 already over 4500. Would everyone agree some guardrails need to be put in place here. It would be good for the sport and the student athlete. At some point roster management is going to be damn near impossible.

The only gardrails that need to be put in place are we get all the top targets we want and everyone else can spend out there own buttholes for the leftovers!

You should only get 1 free transfer without sitting out a year unless your coach leaves.

College football is broken. Unrestricted free agency year after year for these kids.

I dont know anyone who thinks it should be the way it is right now, the question is what can the NCAA even do without it being challenged in court and losing?
They just dont seem to have any control left in their own sport.
They come up with a restriction that makes sense and then it just gets challenged repeatedly until someone finds a judge that will agree with them. Now that athletes have money to throw around themselves they can find the right lawyers to find the right judges. Spent 2 years at JUCO and 3 years in 4 year D1? Find a judge that says the first college doesnt count towards your 4/5 years and get granted another year or two as a result
Spent 3 years at a DII or DIII school and move up to D1 your last year; find a judge that was because you're not D1 those first 3 years dont count against d1 eligbility

Has Max Johnson entered the portal yet? He has suffered the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, and has one year of eligibility remaining

Incredibly it was feared that Johnson's leg would have to be amputated after the 2024 break. He actually made it onto the field in 2025.

Nothing will be done until either. They split from the NCAA or they make them employees so they can give them contracts.

A kid can sign in December and then change his mind in January and enroll with another team and then still change his mind after spring practice and go somewhere else

I don’t think said kid can do this anymore now that there’s only 1 portal entry period. But I could be wrong, I’m a bit hazy on how that works.
