Start the process of booking a ticket with AA and see what credit cards they offer you at checkout

They offered me a $400 statement credit + 60K miles + first annual fee waived on the Citi Platinum a couple years ago

Same here. You also get a 1/2 off companion ticket once a year but the card does carry a $99 yearly fee. My fiance and I each got a card and each got 60,000 miles.

You'll earn AA miles faster with Citibank credit cards that have points transfers to AA instantly than with the AA cards.

But if you want the free bags or whatever the card will do that, but I don't know why a single traveler would need to ever check a bag enough to make that matter much. Can also hit the AA SUBs to boost the stockpile of course.

Do not limit your points to one airline, as stated. Do Chase, Citi, Amex, anything that allows you flexibility. If you take 10 roundtrips a year (between you and wife, or her coming home) it'll take you a nearly a year (assuming 2000 miles earned each leg) to have enough miles for an economy ticket to almost anywhere in the US.

I was on an AA flight, and they announced that you could get an application for an American Advantage card from the flight attendants with a code written on it. It costs $99 a year but came with 60K miles, gives you free bags and some other benefits.

I had not applied for a new card in over a decade, but I bit on the offer, and it has been a decent deal.

Does the rest of the family travel at all and what city are you based in?

We went with the Citi AA Executive Platinum card. Its got pretty high fees but comes with lounge access. Since we travel with kids a lot it pays for itself. There's 100k bonus miles if you spend 10k on it in 3 months. Since we live in Dallas theres a 90%+ chance that whatever flight we take will be either American or OneWorld so running all our bills/monthly spend through it to chase the bonus and executive platinum status made sense.

If you're not in a hub city yourself then go with the other posters advice and get a non-specific card that allows you to use miles on any carrier
