In four years time, China will have nearly 200 million people living alone, usually far from home. The current figure is 125 million. Many are young people who have moved to the cities for work, and don’t know anybody, which can be unsettling for some, even suicidal for others.

“Are You Dead?” app designed for people living alone surges to number 1 in China

A new paid app called “Are You Dead?” or “Dead Yet?” has surged to the top of China’s charts, targeted at young people living alone in major cities, who fear dying without anyone realizing.

quote:

Launched in May 2025, the app requires users to check in every two days by tapping a large on-screen button to confirm they are alive. If they fail to do so, the app automatically alerts a chosen emergency contact that something may be wrong.

quote:

At the start of 2026, downloads have spiked, making it the most downloaded paid app in China.

quote:

The surge comes as solo living rises, with figures showing China could have up to 200 million one-person households by 2030. The app markets itself as a “safety companion” for people living alone, students away from home, and those choosing a solitary lifestyle.

On Chinese social media, one user wrote: “There is a fear that people living alone might die unnoticed, with no one to call for help. I sometimes wonder, if I died alone, who would collect my body?”

quote:

Internationally, the app is listed as Demumu and ranks among the top paid utility apps in the US, Singapore, Hong Kong, Australia, and Spain, potentially driven by Chinese users overseas. It costs 8 yuan or approximately $1.15.

The founders, three people born after 1995, say the app cost around 1,000 yuan, or less than $150, to create. One founder told Chinese media they plan to sell 10 percent of the company for one million yuan and are exploring a version aimed at elderly users, targeting China’s large over-60 population.

You should read a post before you respond. There isnt a "yes" button. Only a "check-in" button, which the app requires users click every two days or it alerts contacts of family/friends that you provide it.

Can the emergency contact not simply text them and ask?

One time I was visiting my grandma and noticed her phone would occaisionally ring and she would pick it up and say something real quick then hang up. I thought that was odd so I finally asked her about it and she said she and another old widow down the street would call each other several times a day just to confirm they were still alive. Another old woman who lived alone on their street had died that year and several days later the mailman noticed a smell coming from the house. They were terrified of that. They also had some type of agreement where if someone checked on them and found them dead they would make sure they were dressed decently.

Man, those old Southern women were something else. I don't care if I die as long as I have clean underwear on.

It's not too far off from what's happening here. I have a wife and kids but had to move out of my hometown to find a decent job. I know a lot of single people who did this. It's kind of a trade off you get when you transition from a manufacturing and more localized based economy to a more specialized and global based economy. Companies go to places with more talent and better transportation options.

The fact that you think I was being serious is better than the joke itself.
