I’m out here for what it’s worth. I’ve been getting my arse absolutely handed to me. I started hunting this place last week for the first time so I’m trying to learn it, and it hasn’t been easy. Yesterday midday I decided to go to a ridge I had been eyeing on the map. Since I have my camper, I only had my kayak. Started with a 4 wheeler ride with the kayak on back, then a 3/4 mile paddle. Knew there was some swamp bottom to cross before the ridge, but didn’t think anything of it because it’s been so dry. The 1/4 mile walk from the kayak to the ridge was BRUTAL. Thick, vines, and soft bottom. Ended up filling my boots up on the walk out.
There’s another route to take in there that shows an atv trail on the map. However, to get to that trail would’ve been too far for me to paddle. After that walk out, I decided it was worth it to drive 2+ hours home to get my boat and my ebike, put the bike in the boat, then take the atv trail in. Got home around 10:30. Unloaded the 4 wheeler, got the boat prepped since it hasn’t been used since the summer, washed clothes, in bed around 11:30. Couldn’t sleep. Got up at 2:30, got loaded up, drove back here this morning. Get to where the clearly marked atv trail is supposed to be, and can’t find it. Walked around in the dark for nearly an hour looking.
Now I’m just sitting on a log about 50 yards from the boat. There’s other people back here so I don’t wanna go walk around this early and mess them up.
I need a win. Badly. If this is considered a sit, it’s #71 for the season, and I haven’t laid eyes on a good buck yet.

No offense, but I’d rather not say. Public land has been getting so crowded, I have to be as secretive as possible lol
The main reason I even started looking at new places is because my favorite place has gotten overrun with people. It happens fast too. Two years ago, there was hardly anyone there. Then people started posting some good bucks on Facebook from there and it blew up. Last year was crowded, this year there were trucks lining the roads because the parking lots were full. I packed up camp and took off to find something less pressured.

Find a way to hike into the mud at Joyce or Maurepas. Maybe a helicopter.
You will be alone

That is something i want to do one day. Looks and sounds like hell. I would be willing to bet that it is the hardest terrain to hunt in the country.

I considered buying the mudder boots that open up like bat wings to disperse your weight. But I am not convinced they would work out there....

I’m not going to say there’s a 0% chance of that happening, but the odds are very slim. I’m ok with getting my arse kicked, but that’s borderline suicide from what I’ve heard
Today was a hell of a day. Ended up contacting wildlife and fisheries and was able to get a guy on the phone that pointed me straight to the trail I was missing. While I was looking for it earlier in the morning I jumped a pretty good buck too. Grabbed some lunch at the truck midday and went back in. Found some good sign, picked a tree, started climbing and there was a bow hanger in it. I can’t get away from the people. Gotta stay positive though. I chase the rut around the state, so it’s a little easier to keep a positive attitude knowing that it could happen at any given minute.
I’ll be back after them in the morning!
