Or, did he not really become a "household name" until after his downfall?

Pablo was one of the biggest, most powerful figures in the history of modern time. The war on drugs didn’t start until his downfall. At his peak, his net worth was rumored to be in excess of $30 billion.

I still think his desire to be in politics was his biggest downfall esp his ego when it came to rejection.

Famous guys like El Chapo, etc where a small fraction of what Pablo was and achieved.

I knew the name before I knew what a cartel was. Didn't really pay a lot of attention to it, and I thought that Medellín was the family name.

I’m in my mid-40s and remember my dad telling me about it that morning after seeing it in the newspaper. He spoke about it in a celebratory way and seemed well aware of the situation.

there are a couple of really interesting reads about the Colombian cartels in their 80s hay days, one iirc, is “The Accountants Story,” iirc, written by one of Escobar’s bookkeepers, “Cociane Cowboys,” is another one

Everyone in South Florida knew who he was in the early 80s. Miami was literally flooded with cocaine in that period. People couldn’t get enough of that stuff and were willing to fork over $1,000 for a kilogram.

Scarface is pretty damn close to being a documentary for what the cocaine drug wars in Miami were like.

He pretty much was THE cartel. Multiple cartels with any power didn’t exist until after he was gone. He controlled everything.

When he made the cover of Times magazine and then made the Forbes billionaire list, it was a big deal, because back then magazines were a big deal.

Probably closer to $3,000 or $4,000 per kg. But if you factor in that this was in the early 80s, it’s probably closer to $12,000 or $13,000 if you adjust it for inflation.
