The North American Aviation P-51 Mustang is an American long-range, single-seat fighter and fighter-bomber used during World War II and the Korean War, among other conflicts. The Mustang was designed in 1940 by a team headed by James H. Kindelberger of North American Aviation (NAA) in response to a requirement of the British Purchasing Commission. The commission approached NAA to build Curtiss P-40 fighters under license for the Royal Air Force (RAF). Rather than build an old design from another company, NAA proposed the design and production of a more modern fighter. The prototype NA-73X airframe was completed on 9 September 1940, 102 days after contract signing, achieving its first flight on 26 October.

Thanks guys. Feels good to have the first build of the year in the books. Now to pick out the next one….
Definitely going to be armor since I just finished an airplane. Just have to decide which one.

I can understand why NAA went to the bubble canopy in the D model for visibility, but I like the look of the B model better

I need to build another Phantom. I did one several years ago for a friend who asked me to build one for his dad who was a crew chief on one on Vietnam.

My recent vehicle builds have all been German, Soviet, or American. So i was looking at the British Chieftain, Tortoise, and Stuart. Also considered the Italian P40 heavy tank. In the end though I went with the WWI era French FT-17.
I’m laying it out now. Looks like this one might take a while.

You’re looking at my retirement plan. I have another 6-7 years to build it up.

I like the Scat(Olds was a hell of a guy,) or the Coonass(sentimental
I have a friend that has actually flown Scat XVII before it was retired, they were going to send Olds back to the states when he got his fifth kill in Vietnam so he was "stuck at four," I know some of the guys that flew with him that smirk at that with a wink and a nod

How many kills you reckon he actually ended up with?

hard to say, I met him at a few reunions and I regret not trying to find that out but he went back to Vietnam after he was rotated back and flew unauthorized missions, usually with some one else's name on the board, it's possible that a few additional kills were made and credited to someone else othe than who pulled the trigger, the man did love to share war stories though, and he loved his whiskey

How about the one on the far right, 11th from the bottom. Can't read the box, but it's some kind of armoured tracked truck thingie.

I actually ended up picking the top one on that stack. Working on it now.

The Mustang shot down 4,950 enemies in the air and destroyed more than 4,000 more on the ground, along with 230 V-1 vengeance weapons.
quote:
The P-51 Mustang is widely considered one of the best, if not the best, piston-engine fighters of WWII, primarily for its unmatched long range, speed, and versatility, which enabled it to escort bombers deep into Germany, crippling the Luftwaffe and securing Allied air superiority, a feat unmatched by other fighters like the Spitfire or P-47 in that specific role. Its combination of the aerodynamic airframe and the powerful Rolls-Royce Merlin engine made it a dominant, multi-role aircraft, excelling at escort, ground attack, and reconnaissance.
quote:
While other planes like the Spitfire (excellent dogfighter) or P-47 Thunderbolt (tough ground-pounder) excelled in specific areas, the P-51 combined speed, range, and firepower better than any other single-engine fighter, filling a vital strategic gap.
Its effectiveness was so profound that German pilots acknowledged its threat, with some feeling defeat was inevitable once the Mustang appeared over Berlin.
In essence, the P-51 Mustang wasn't just a great fighter; it was a war-winning weapon system due to its unique ability to project air power deep into enemy territory.
