Mobile claims the first Mardi Gras but it isn’t. It’s New Orleans.

What Mobile claims to be Mardi Gras was really a New Year’s Eve celebration by the Cowbellion de Rakin group which was not affiliated with Mardi Gras which officially begins on twelfth night.

It was Comus in New Orleans in 1857 that marked the first official Mardi Gras parade that occurred on Mardi Gras day or Fat Tuesday.

Just fyi.

Uh oh. Here we go. This is only slightly less contentious than the discussion of Old Metairie's boundaries.

Need to see gangs of Mobile and New Orleans hooligans battle to settle this once for all.

The Carnival of Venice (Italian: Carnevale di Venezia; Venetian: Carnaval de Venessia) is an annual festival held in Venice, Italy, famous for its elaborate costumes and masks. The Carnival ends on Shrove Tuesday (Martedì Grasso or Mardi Gras), which is the day before the start of Lent on Ash Wednesday.

The first Venice Carnival is traditionally dated to 1162, celebrated to mark the Venetian Republic's military victory over the Patriarch of Aquileia, Ulrich II. Citizens gathered in San Marco Square for dancing and festivities, marking the beginning of the tradition.
