LM = PM

Just an insanely similar career trajectory.
Success at school without a long history of success
Les OSU
Paul ND
Both Come to LSU and win a championship Year 3
Both stumble after but eventually rebuild the team around strong defense/pitching and make it back to the championship game but lose
some success after but never really threaten
Fired/retires
Shitty swan song at floundering programs.
Les Kansas
Paul South Carolina

Their paths and tenures were incredibly similar. Yet it always flabbergasted me that from 2012-2016 everyone called for Les’s head, but know one called for PMs head. Yet they were doing the same “les with more”. I think Les’s underachievments allowed paul’s to fly under the radar longer than it should have

Similar path for different reasons. LM was just hard headed. PM work ethic after 1 national championship went way down and fell off a cliff after 2017. We all remember him not knowing Todd Peterson didn’t actually hit in high school. Could you imagine Jay not knowing everything about his players?

Hopefully this means Lane wins 2 of the next 4 natties

Paul went to Omaha twice in that period, with two of the best teams in school history never to win it all. He lost in the supers two other times in that period. We went to the CWS finals in 2017. It’s not like we we couldn’t imagine the taste success in those years

2011, Les should’ve won another championship. 2012, Les is one tackle on a 40 yard screen pass from another championship. Les was stubborn but teams always competed. He just didn’t adapt when other teams were. Paul rebuilt LSU for a while after smoke did some damage. He just couldn’t get it done the last few years though.

My point exactly. After 2011 and 2012 les didnt win it all with arguably his most talented teams, everyone called for his head
After PM didnt win in omaha with arguably his most talented teams (katz & raph years, bregman years) no one called for his head

Because (for the most part) LSU baseball fans know that winning the CWS is hard and it is totally unreasonable to call for the head of a coach who made it there 3 times in 5 years

I totally forgot PM went to South Carolina. Such a weird move by him. It tarnished his legacy IMO

It shouldn’t. He was a top 5 coach in the sport for over a decade here. Just didn’t adapt to the way the game was changing, and I think his love for the game fell off a bit as he dealt with his own health issues and the passing of his father.
He probably should’ve won more titles than he did here, but got snake bit a few times on the big stage by bad breaks. We parted ways at the right time and amicably. He should always be welcomed back to LSU with his legacy intact

Les is the greatest coach in LSU history.
Saban is obviously the best coach but no one did as much as Les.
Orgeron had the greatest team.
I’ll always appreciate him but the game definitely passed him up.

Lsu football was a top 8 team each year from 2010-2012 after the regular season. If football had a 8 team playoff back then they would have made it 3 years out of 3. Fans still called for his head. Winning a natty in football is just as hard as it is in baseball. Still have to be the #1 team out of ~130. Going to the top 8 playoff 3 out of 5 years with no wins shouldnt have been looked at any different than what les did in that 3 year span. They were both very successful, just couldnt get over the hump. Yet during their tenures, one was praised and one was criticized. Never made sense to me

This is some absurd revisionist history. Absolutely no one was calling for Les’ ouster after 2012
People were fed up with Les by 2016 because he had great teams and great players that would lose to Bama and then quit on the season, ending up in some second-tier bowl in late December.
Every point you make is based on sentiment that didn’t exist. And no, winning a football championship is not as hard as winning in baseball, by the very nature of the games themselves.

People were calling for Les’s head as early as 09. Sure alot of it had to do with Saban winning that year at bama, but it was happening. 2009 and 2010 had th ole miss and tennessee clock management blunders where a big majority of the fan base stopped taking him seriously. 2011 erased all of that up until 1/9, and then it was back. As soon as we lost to
Florida in 2012 due to lack of offense it just added fuel to the fire. If tou really dont remember that then I guess you just werent paying attention

And now that most teams have abandoned the running game, that’s what it takes to win. Kinda hard to believe no team I. The SEC has much of a running game! That is why no one can score a TD from the red zone.
Give me some Lesticles ball!

Pretty selective memory. People did, but PM kept us competitive enough for years. You knew we wouldn't win it but we were competitive. First it was the best change then he adapted to that style and stuck with it after the NCAA adjusted and got things back to normal.
He stuck with defense and pitching. That'll win a ton of games but he neglected the offensive side of things.

No, no reasonable person thought that Les should be fired in the years 2008-2012. We had a national standoff with Michigan in 2007 just to keep him. Les was bringing in top recruiting classes every year, and he had the team relevant again after two down years following his star quarterback of the future fumbling his chance to lead the program. People who knew what they were talking about were not calling for his head. He was befuddling at times, but unless we pulled in Saban or Meyer, the vast majority of the fan base still believed there was no one better to keep us in contention year in and year out.
Maybe YOU were calling for his head, and a handful of internet ranters. But most people weren’t until it became clear that Saban had passed him.
And if you still choose to believe that they were, and Paul was the recipient of some grace that Les wasn’t, then you have answered your own question. It is harder to win in baseball.

Im recalling this from the stand point of having to defend les non stop those years. Was at LSU at the time. Vast majority wanted to fire les to bring in a chip kelly or a chris peterson or a mark dantonio. Never made sense to me

I do not believe this is the right sentiment. Again, it is harder to win in baseball and any team can win it if they’re hot at the right time. Paul kept us competitive enough to where if we could grab a top 8 seed, we always believed we could go on a run. At no time was this more obvious than in 2017 when we took 2 from Oregon State. We win that championship series if Lange is available.
Faith in Paul fell off after we failed to host in 2018, lost a home super in 2019, and failed to host again in 2021. That was his era akin to Miles’ 2013-2016 when the patience ran out
