Getting some work done at the house that has the shaded part of my backyard getting torn up/regraded. Plan is to put mulch around the live oaks and zoysia in this space.

The full sun portion of my yard is currently centipede. It does need to be leveled but otherwise could be managed for the time being.

Total yard is about 7,500 sqft. Half getting majority shade (4 hours mixed sunlight/day under oaks and house). Other half is nearly full sun (6+ hours)

So the question begs do we:

1. Go for broke and rip up whole yard and lay 17 pallets worth of Zoysia?

2. Lay Zoysia in the shaded part and level centipede with sand?

3. Lay Zoysia in the shaded part and work on Bermuda seeding the centipede?

TIA

Just get rid of the Centipede while you're doing the work.

ZOYSIA. I did this report on the Home and Garden forum several years ago dealing with a similar issue:

The Saga of my Shady Backyard

In it, as I stated, "rather than re-sodding, I decided to go with plugs, and on each of them I prepped them well (loosened roots, fertilized each, etc). Somewhere along the way, I decided to not only use St. Aug plugs, but also Zoysia plugs, figuring one might do better than the other. My idea was to put 'em both in mixed up, and:

I can tell you that over time, the Zoysia has definitely won that fight, and looks fantastic:

So in your experience the zoysia did better than st Augustine in the shade?

Yeah I’ve got St. Aug in my front yard that’s partial sun and it’s a pain to maintain now. Looks awesome when it’s right but rarely is nowadays.

My Zoysia is slow, unyielding, and takes pity on no weed. It steadily takes over everything.

Yeah I don't even know why I just put down pre emergent. I have yet to see a Zoysia lawn with a lot of weeds.

Seconded. I have perfect zoysia in spots that eventually turned to dirt with centipede and St Aug.

I did a partial replacement with zoysia when I built an outdoor kitchen/patio thinking I would use it to plug the rest of the yard and save $10k or so. It’s slowly working, but I’ve spent a ton of money and time and I’m still crying.
