it's not the end all, be all, but speed is important

the "dash" measurements are pretty good at projecting speed

But the length at which it is discussed is sickening.

Almost totally pointless. Squats and power cleans should have replaced bench at the combine years ago.

the 40 definitely matters for WR and DB's.

Lineman, not so much.

it matters for LBs also

not RBs really

10 yard dash is really important for DEs, but the ability to finish a 40 matters (closing speed)

the 40 by itself isn't a huge thing for DTs, but a 4.8 at 300 will definitely show overall athleticism and quick feet

why? it's a measure of athleticism and speed

i would say LB's are marginal. If you are relying on your LB's to cover 40 yards with speed your scheme is fricked. I would say LB and RB 40's are about equal in terms of meaning. the 20 yard shuttles or cone drills are probably more important.

times on hard tracks in shorts =/= times in pads on the field

a 4.6 guy could possibly run faster than a 4.5 guy when they put on pads and run on grass

Saves and its not even close. Then bench. Probably 4 to 10 others and then 40 times.
