kitchen Vent replacement

When I bought my current house and remodeled it, I removed the microwave from above the range. I had a hood built and bought a vent. The vent I bought was a Broan 390-HS. It says 440 max blower CFM on the specs. Anyway, I have had enough with it. My biggest burner is on the front of my stove, and that is what I use to cook steaks. When cooking steaks, I have to put a fan in the hall pointing at the smoke detector. I can see some of the smoke getting sucked, but not nearly enough. The vent does not cover all of the front burner. This vent is 20.5 inches wide in a 30 inch hood. Should I buy a bigger, stronger vent, or should I have a new hood built that comes out more, covering the entire burner? I will try to get pics. Sorry for the rambling. Thanks.
ETA: to add pics. Please excuse the mess.

If the hood comes out further will you hit your head on it?
And the answer is you need stronger suction. There are things such as "inline" motor to assist with suction, or act independently.

Look at a Tradewinds or similar model. It can be cut in to your current wooden hood. It’s flush mounted and they have a high cfm model with a booster fan in the line. Loud but most of them are these days.

Can’t be as loud as a smoke detector.

Yeah, that vent won't do anything. Ideally, your vent hood should be wider than your stove by 3" on either side and should cover most, if not all, of the depth. Go with a vent-a-hood. I have a 30" 900 CFM (1200 CFM equivalent) dual motor magic lung. Wish I could have gone for the appropriately sized 36" over a 30" range but I was limited by existing cabinetry.

That setup had a very low chance of success. get an under cabinet steel vent hood as wide as will fit and your problem will disappear (up the vent flue). Depending on the height of that wood cabinet above your stove you might need to modify it a bit, and you’ll need a solid 3/4” to 1” bottom panel to attach it to.
broan has several models to choose from. Mine is a beast over a 6 burner propane stove. It will raise the hair up off your head. 42” wide over a 36” stove is standard

There is cabinet to go under. This hood goes all the way up to the ceiling.

Anyone know who or what type of place I would call to get info? I don’t want to deal with someone like Lowe’s or Home Depot.

you can call Broan or look up dealers on their website they sell to all appliance stores. I ordered mine from the depot and installed it myself but there was an existing vent flue
If you are in BR Johnstone Supply is a good resource as well

cfm only as good as your duct getting the air out of the house. You need to look and see what type of duct and routing. One of the junk flexible hoses snaked around 3 different corners and necked down to 4" at termination is going to leave you disappointed no matter the blower cfm. Ideally you'd have 6 or7" hardpipe exiting the home in the shortest direction possible with the least restrictive exiting vent possible.
Also to consider if you have a tight spray-foamed home, you sometimes need "makeup air" to let air into the home that the hood is blowing out. This can be accomplished as simply by opening a window or as complicated as a dedicated HVAC unit that is designed to do this. unlikely your home is built this tight though.
My vent hood is about 400cfm and duct is hardpipe with 2 turns. Plenty of airflow. Because house is built tight I will open a window or door if I want maximum ventilation.

Thanks. I am in Lafayette. I can probably call Tops.

It pretty much goes straight up with no turns. I had it piped about six months ago. It used to just vent into the attic. The house was built in 94 to 96 range. Not tight at all.
ETA: Just went up there, it is 6" hard pipe straight up until about a foot from the top, then it makes about a 45* throught the roof. I don’t remember this being an issue when I first remodeled.

that’ll be fine. Upgrade to a vent hood unit and you’ll be good

that should be money sans a damper not opening fully or a roof vent being blocked.

This was my thought. I am going to buy a dual motor one and have them mount it more towards the front of the hood. I want the most powerful I can find. I want to hand crank it like a lawnmower.
