We stayed in Varenna this past summer. Our favorite restaurant there was La Scarpetta. A small restaurant that was really good, everything was fresh. Loved the lasagana. My daughter who is a picky eater, loved their pasta. We ate there twice during our stay.

I have been to Lugano twice and Mennagio once. We based in Lugano both times we visited the Italian Lakes Region.
We didn’t do a lot of fine dining in Lugano, but there are a number of atmospheric restaurants by the Town Square and on the waterfront that have good food and great ambiance.
I was in Mennagio in the spring of 2006, just months after Hurricane Katrina. It was a beautiful spring Sunday. We went to church and the children’s first communion was going on. Everyone was dressed in their finest. After mass the waterfront market was in full swing. When the people found out were from New Orleans, we treated like heroes. We were showered with samples of wine, cheese, pastries and other delicacies and everyone wanted to hear Katrina stories. The people were incredibly friendly.
It is a beautiful place with views of Bellagio across the way.

Al Prato in Varenna was fantastic for us. Great atmosphere, views and food.

Visteria in the Hotel Victoria in Varenna is excellent as is Mistral in Bellagio
