Why does every place sell MERCH now

Do people really need a hat and t-shirt from places like the kids’ pediatrician office, or the new lunch spot that’s been open a total of 7 weeks?

Used to be that if you wanted a shirt with the pediatrician or hardware store's name and logo on it, you had to join the local little league.
Now little league teams are named "Yankees" or "Royals", or some other MLB team name instead of "Gros' Ace Hardware" or "LeBlanc's Diner".

ETA: I mean, how else would you prove you went to Lollapalooza if you didn't get the shirt with all the bands listed on the back, or that you drove all the way to Oxford to see Phish during their '98 Tour?

But to answer your questions a lot of people out there will buy anything and hats and tshirts are things people buy because in that instance it seems like a good idea.
Every podcaster or youtube person on the web has merch.. There is this dude on youtube, he is a sheriff's deputy someone in Arizona. He also reviews arrest videos and every video he has a printout of a bingo card that has things people say when they get arrested. shite like "I am going to call my lawyer" "I know my rights", etc and he sells them. So if you watch a video and he gets a bingo, you can easily buy the bingo card from that video.. Why would anyone buy that shite?
Either way, if you buy a tshirt from a podcaster/youtuber you are paying them to advertise their show for them.. People used to but pet rocks so why not sell merch if people will buy it?
