Mark Hamill Supports New ‘Star Wars’ Boss After Kathleen Kennedy’s Exit

Mark Hamill is giving the new leadership at Lucasfilm an enthusiastic endorsement. Speaking to USA Today, the Luke Skywalker actor said he “can’t think of better hands” for “Star Wars” to be in than those of Dave Filoni, who is now Lucasfilm’s co-president and chief creative officer. Filoni is running the “Star Wars” studio alongside Lynwen Brennan after Kathleen Kennedy announced her exit in January.
Hamill noted that Filoni understands the “Star Wars” franchise “so well,” having worked directly with George Lucas on “Star Wars: The Clone Wars.” The actor would later work with Filoni when Luke Skywalker was brought back via de-aging VFX to appear in Disney+ series “The Mandalorian” and “The Book of Boba Fett.” The actor called these projects “great stuff.”
“George was a mentor to Dave, so he knows George’s sensibility,” Hamill added.

Hamill told Comic Book after “The Last Jedi” opened in theaters that he “still hadn’t accepted” what happened to Luke and opposed such a dark heel turn for the character, although the actor stressed on the “Bullseye with Jesse Thorn” podcast last summer that director Rian Johnson made “a great movie,” adding: “I’d love to clear this up. … Rian Johnson is one of the most gifted directors I’ve ever worked with.”
“The fact that I went public with my dissatisfaction with the motivation for Luke becoming a suicidal hermit might have colored things in a way that, maybe I should have kept that to myself,” Hamill admitted. “But I kept saying to Rian, ‘This would just make Luke double down even…’ and he said, ‘Well, your class at the Jedi Academy were wiped out.’ I said, ‘Rian, I saw entire planets wiped out! If anything, Luke doubles down and hardens his resolve in the face of adversity.’ So that’s all.”

Kathleen Kennedy had been with Lucas a long time and was chosen by him to lead Lucasfilm. She was the producer of ET and z jurassic Park. She seemed on paper a good head of company. But the problem was she wanted to push an agenda more than a story. Then the long awaited sequels. Instead of a trilogy you had three movies that didn't connect with each other in any sense. Though I'm not sure being a Lucas acolyte is enough to have a successful franchise.

Kennedy is one of the best producers in history, but I don’t think Star Wars was where she should have gone. It never seemed like a good fit.

I never thought Kennedy had a creative bone in her body. I always thought she was the ops, finance, and day to day person letting Spielberg and later Lucas focus on creative. Disney tried to make her into a Feige for Star Wars, and she sucked.
I watched the round table about the first season of the Mandalorian, and she was a fish out of water with the rest of the creative team.
Filoni has been a little iffy at times with live action productions, but he is still an improvement over Kennedy. Tony Stark’s driver/bodyguard/assistant would have been better.

I'm not much of a Star Wars fan although I've watched most of them, I think. First time I've seen or listened to that guy. If he's the new guy in charge, the movies will continue to suck. His smugness was accentuated by the gay vocal fry.

He’s also been behind all the crap that’s been failing for them. Nothing is going to change at Lucasfilm.

And that’s just the surface. Underneath all that is the zoophilia.

Weird he's calling for more female leads when he literally just took a female's job.

Fans don’t mind female leads, just not MarySue’s like Rey & every girl boss that Disney SW has dumped on the screens in the recent past.

Disagree. His time was done. He earned his payday. It just got picked up by the wrong people.
