Does anyone seriously believe Fernando Mendoza is going to be a great NFL QB?

Did nobody learn their lesson from JJ McCarthy? Fernando seems like an outstanding young man who does things the right way, but I just don’t see him excelling in the NFL. He has a very similar mold, skillset, and story to JJ McCarthy, he’s mobile and he’s a game manager. Like McCarthy, he won a national championship on a super team and was not asked to do very much at all at in college, his defense and run game carried him.
In the national title game, Indiana had 3rd and 6, 3rd and 8, 3rd an 10, and 3rd and 12, and you know what they elected to do each time? Each time they handed the ball off. If you have a first round talent, starting NFL QB on your team, you’re really not going to put the ball in his hands and trust him to make a play on any of those 3rd downs? I’m not saying that Mendoza is going to be awful, but there’s no way I’m taking him with the #1 overall pick. I know this is a very weak QB class, but If I’m drafting a QB, I’m more interested in guys that actually had to air the ball out in college and carry their team.

i cant answer that with certainty but comparing their college careers is laughable.
Mendoza went undefeated and won the heisman at indiana.
JJ Handed the ball off and watched his all time defense carry him to a title like he was trent dilfer
I know michigan would have won the title with Mendoza, indiana does not win the title with the nfl version of jj

Thing is, you really never know. Predicting which QB's will actually have NFL success is an inexact science to say the least. Even the "experts" paid millions of dollars to get it right can't consistently get it right.
Numerically, the vast majority of QB prospects don't pan out period. So betting that someone will not succeed is usually the correct bet.
If you look at all the QB's taken in say the 1st and 2nd rounds over the past 20 years, most of them had completely unremarkable careers and washed out in a few seasons.
History is also filled with 'can't miss' QB prospects who were taken int eh top 5 who very much missed.
Thing is, in today's NFL the QB position is so important that it's usually worth taking a gamble on any semi-reputable prospect in hope he pans out. If you don't have a QB you don't have a team really.

He has the right attitude, work ethic, and mentality to be successful
I wouldn't be surprised at all if he did very well

Mendoza is a bigger Kirk Cousins, with a better back shoulder ball and some wheels. He's going to be very solid. Might even be a Top 10 QB in the NFL by year 2.

He will be great because he has enough arm talent and mobility to do everything that an NFL QB needs to do. But what sets him apart is his intelligence. He’s by far the smartest QB in the league just going by educational accomplishments.
If you work hard and are smart, you’ll be really good. Most QBs that can’t process the speed of the game are the failures bc they don’t have it between the ears.
He’s a perfect fit for a clown franchise like the Raiders. He brings some immediate maturity

Did anyone believe "freaking" Indiana was gonna go undefeated and win the title ?
There's been NFL QB's with less than he has coming in that were great.

He played in an offense that required him to make nfl throws a good amount. Deep outs, skinny hitches inside the red zone, etc
From what I’ve seen he is also what I’d consider pretty good at throwing a deep ball down the sideline and achieving that in a bread basket effect with the arc of the throw
Do I think he is going to be great? Great is a heavy term so probably not but this years qb class is fricking awful and he will almost certainly be the best.
He is far far far ahead of Ty Simpson in operating an offense on schedule, playing in the pocket, and overall awareness.
Idk enough to comment on which has better arm talent

Not saying he's going to light up the NFL, but comparing him to McCarthy is embarrassing. Mendoza actually had to throw the ball and did well at it.

His timing with WRs and his back shoulder throws are legit
I wouldn’t be shocked if he has a 10yr career at least

Mendoza made tons of plays all year. Look at the Ohio state game—huge back shoulder TD against an NFL corner, deep ball down the sideline from own red zone on 3rd down. Both games against Oregon, the Penn State and Iowa games. Those are teams littered with NFL players on D and he made countless big time throws to win those games for them. His run against Miami to pick up that first down, stay upright, and get the TD, was legendary shite. He went 14/16 for 192 and 3TD against Alabama.
OP is a tard.

He made a lot of NFL throws this year and he has a bit of dog in him. Won the Heisman and led frickin' Indiana to a national title. I don't know if he's gonna be great but he's earned his shot to prove it.

Can any QB be successful in Las Vegas?
Posted on 4/21/26 at 8:07 am to NeilArmstrong1969
Can he be a good NFL QB, yes. He has enough physical talent, is smart and has a great attitude.
Will he? No because he is going to the Raiders.

The last guy they drafted to be the franchise guy amassed 35,000 yards and 217 TD in 9 seasons and was a 4x pro bowler.

They just hired a well respected young OC as HC who just won the Super Bowl with Sam Darnold, signed an All Pro level center, and revamped their D with elite FA acquisitions on a $100MM spending spree and retained one of the best edge rushers in the game. Youth at RB and a tier 1 TE, and a veteran QB and great leader to mentor him.
He isn’t going to some dire situation.
