The Thing, The Fly, The Blob (I love the cheesy '80s version), Invasion of the Body Snatchers ('78 version), I actually may go with Dawn of the Dead. I'm drawing a blank now. Surely there are some non-horror examples.

This was a show, right? I agree with this. Ocean's 11 is antoher. Personally, I like the Scorsese Cape Fear, but a lot don't.
eta: Last of the Mohicans a remake?
One more: Red Dragon in a close call over Manhunter

Original CAPE FEAR was better. Better if the villain is more of an ordinary somewhat charming guy who seems reasonable to the legal system.
THE THING. I like both versions of that.
Original NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD was better. DAWN remake was better.
Worst remake: PSYCHO. Shot for shot. What was the point of that?
THE FUGITIVE was a TV series and the film was not a remake strictly speaking.

its close, i gotta give the edge to the 1932 version simply because of the era.

I know many are gonna disagree, but War of the Worlds.

This is probably the biggest improvement.

What about The Manchurian Candidate? I like the remake better than the original.

I really like both and think Manhunter is pretty awesome. Ralph Fiennes is what gives the edge to Red Dragon for me though.

Disagree on MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE.
SCARFACE. At the time it came out the remake was regarded as too long and too dark. I like both versions. Prefer the original.
INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS. Latest version was not so good. The '78 remake though was well done. Prefer the original.

Couldn't disagree more considering the original is one of the best films of all time IMO.
Spiderman is a good example. Batman as well.

House of Wax (1953) with Vincent Price was better than the original Mystery of the Wax Museum (1933). Will not discuss the 2005 remake.
