Lotta people don't like Mel.
Hollywood buys the reviewers through promises of interviews with the stars, screenings, freebies called "press junkets." Plus, the only way a reviewer lands on the poster, ad, or box is if they give a positive review. That's why there's a lot of crap getting 'thumbs up.'
If you say EVERYTHING sucks (or 90% of it) you don't keep that job long. Newspaper ads / magazine ads for the movies. Can't expect a
real reviewer to keep a job long.

i stopped trusting rotten tomatoes after they gave Wall-E a 96% rating

Rottentomatoes doesn't review anything themselves. The ratings are compilations of what critics said and they interpret the reviews as thumbs up or thumbs down.

I don't get how anyone could have given that movie a bad review. Such a brilliantly done film by Pixar. It's like when Return of the King got a few bad reviews.

I thought Wall-E was a shitty movie, too.
The beginning of the movie was pretty good, but overall it was so hypocritical that I could barely stand to finish it.

wow..... faceoff isn't in the same league as braveheart

I don't know... Face Off was probably the best action flick of the 90's. I think this was the 90's equivalent of Die Hard. These two movies are the blueprints for the action genre.
Braveheart...eh.
Rotten Tomatoes has always been pretty reliable. Two movies that come to mind that are surprisingly "rotten" are The Life Aquatic (52%) and Vanilla Sky (39%). These are two movies I would have thought the critics would adore... apparently not. Quite shocking, actually.

This.

I do think metacritic is better since it doesn;t rate reviews up or down, but instead on a percentage scale. So a 5-star review is not treated the same as 3.5 stars. Or whatever scale they use.
But, since these sites merely aggregate reviews, I beg of you.... READ THE ACTUAL REVIEW. Not all 3.5 star reviews are created equal. Normally, when a reviewer raves about, say, Crank, (s)he is not comparing it to Citizen Kane, but other action movies. It's not an absolute scale in most cases.

This one really is insane. Face off was ridiculous with both actors hamming it up pretending to be the other actor. It was embarrassing at times.
The 90% score just boggles my mind. I know it is fashionable to hate Mel now since his meltdown but when did Cage and Travolta become fashionable.

Indeed.
Now, it was no Die Hard, but it was just about as good as an action flick could get. It was the best 90's action movie. I seriously can not think of any GOOD action movies in the past 10 years... the action genre has died.
Maybe The Matrix? Kill Bill?
These are hardly classical examples of "action" movies.
ETA: T2 gets props... wasn't that in 1992?

FWIW...I thought Face/Off was great the first time I saw it. Nothing but ridiculous fun. The last action sequence is embarassingly over the top, but I had fun watching the first 90%. What can I say, I like John Woo and his doves.
I also loved Braveheart, so go figure.
