Defense in 2nd Half against UW

Just rewatched the 2nd Half against Washington...The defense wasnt that bad. In fact, if you take away the last second TD, they only gave up 3 pts the whole half. Also, considering that UW had almost 300 yards of total offense at halftime (Horrible, but remember 2nd Half) and ending with 478.. 178 came in the second half. BUT, 81 yards came in the last two minutes!!!!!!!!!
Bottom line is in the Second Half the defense played terrific...3 pts and 81 yards ill take that

This is a stretch. They played improved would be a better assessment.

I agree totally. Big difference between halves.

I would have liked to see the defense take some pride in that final drive.. even if the game was out of reach..
But yes, much improved in the 2nd half.

Yes and although I've been most critical of Chavis, to his credit we did play much better in the 2nd half.
And we did exactly what we needed to do on their last drive. They needed two scores and they were denied.

You are right, and many of those yards came on the final drive. In the third quarter the defense was lights out, and Patrick Peterson shut down his side of the field, as they did not even line up a WR to his side most of the time. However, there were mistakes made, such as playing prevent on the wrong plays and not playing prevent on other plays, mostly on the last drive.

The stats may be good but we have got to learn how to wrap & tackle better. There were a lot of big plays that were made where the defender should have made the tackle (This, is coming from my fat arse on the couch).

I just got to watch the replay last night and you are 100% correct. Another thing that everyone forgets and nobody wants to admit is that once Miles has the win in the bag - he doesn't give a $hit what happens. Hence, the last second TD.
I was standing right behind the Tiger bench at UW and in the 2nd half I saw guys nodding off on the bench. In the locker room after the game there were guys literally sleeping against the wall.
Hope we didn't pay those "sleep consultants" too much!
Expect a different team against the smart kids.

One thing that stuck out to me in general was just how ineffective alot of our blitzing was.

You also have to add that the right side of the UW line was standing up before the snap on the last 2 plays of the game. Those plays shouldn't have counted.

If we are still looking for positives. We had 8 tackles for loses or behind the line of scrimmage.

THANK YOU, there were TWO false starts by Washington on the last drive. The refs didn't give a shite, the game was over so they let Washington cash in.

Watching the game again last night on CST, I think the defense was gassed on the last drive. Chavis doesn't substitute constantly (which I generally support) and our boys were out there for 84 plays (a Hell of a lot) and by that time, it was, what almost 1 PM to their bodies? I know my drinking had slowed down by that time, as a comparison.

If you walk into something without knowing what's going to happen, of course you're going to suck.
LSU went into the Washington having no clue what they were going to do. With a decent QB like Locker, they were able to do what they wanted.
LSU adjusted and came back in the second half and cut in half what they did in the first half.
Definite adjustments. That's why, for the life of me, I can't figure out why people are making ridiculous accusations and assumptions after the first game.

Miles was on Wwl last night and he spoke about the last drive. Per him we played prevent and kept the ball in front of us because we knew the only thing that could kill us was a quick score. Looked like it worked pretty good to me.

I went to the game and left it like everyone, a little disappointed. Now I also felt I’d rather be 1-0 with corrections to make then 0-1 with corrections to make. I figured I’ll take an ugly win over a pretty loss any day.
I got a chance to watch the replay last night. As some other people have said, I didn’t feel as bad about the game watching after it again. I mean with 1:54 left in the game, we’re up 31-16. Had we held that as the final score, I don’t think as many people would feel as bad.

completely agree.
i was not happy while watching the game but everyone is emotional and irrational in the heat of the moment. i calmed down, realized we made adjustments and all but shut them down in the second half. i still don't know what the future holds but i for one am not flipping out about what happened.

I think you are right that they didn't try as hard, but there was 1 bogus call and 2 missed calls that hurt them on that drive. The phantom roughing the passer and the non called false starts on their right tackle that has been mentioned.

This season, in some ways, may very well mirror Miles' first in Baton Rouge. In 2005 we open with a "home game" in Tempe, Arizona with a new coaching staff, including D-Coor. Pelini, if you remember, kept the corners about 10 yards off the ball and played "soft".
The tiger fanbase went crazy as it almost cost us that game and did cost us the next game versus UTenn. After that, LSU fixed the problems and was a really good team by years end, winning the West and beating the crap out of Miami in the Peach Bowl. The UTenn game was the only loss until the SECCG. Final record: 11-2.
Point to all of this being, if you are rational, you must give this time to play out. We could very well be a much improved team from last year and still have a similar record because the schedule is so hard (@Bama, @Om, @UGA, FL @ home).
In the end, all will be well...your children will not face life threatening illness if LSU does not have a good football year, neither will you. Furthermore, you cannot personally control what happens. Worry about the things in life that you can control.
