I'll start with things that were most apparent to me....

Excluding 2 blown plays, I thought the defense played pretty damn well. MSU scored 26 points, 9 of which had nothing to do with their offense. So LSU really allowed 17, and 10 of those came exclusively from the 2 blown plays. There has definitely been improvement from the washington game. I cannot emphasize how big the goal line stand was and I think it could be huge for momentum going forward. While the tackling still needs to get better, I think it will get better in a drier, later in the day enviornment. I still don't like alot of the subs, or lack thereof, but I won't get into that issue.

With the exception of Chad Jones' AMAZING punt return, the special teams played AWFUL. Like REALLY AWFUL. 3, count em 3 botched snaps/holds directly lead to us missing out on 4 points and directly lead to 7 for MSU (11 point swing). I know it was wet, but the way they occurred was unacceptable. I don't really know how to ensure these don''t happen again (other than more reps), but I hope they don't happen in a dry enviornment. Trindon's return skills on kickoffs were apparent, hopefully he can break one soon.

Now to the complicated part....Offense

To me their performance overall was pretty bad. They only gave us 16 points, although should have had 4 more that special teams fouled up. The rushing numbers are obviously terrible. It's becoming obvious that the offensive line doesn't have what it takes to run block. I don't like blaming one particular player for a unit's problems, but I think Josh Dworaczyk, listed at 6-6 281 is undersized for his position. It seems like defenses are picking on him by putting their better rushers on him and taking advantage of the size matchup. I don't know if we have any better options at his position, but its a problem. Josh has certainly not been helped by some of the run play calling (sweeps to short side of field, etc.), but that issue is already getting beat to death by the Miles haters.

This is my solution.....

The passing offense IS effective. The ghosts of Lee's pick 6's are gone. Jefferson threw for 8.3 yds per ATTEMPT, no picks. These ARE good numbers. I hear gordy, hanagriff, whoever else saying we shouldn't put too much pressure on him, we must continue his development. I think this is way overblown. He's not some retard we are trying to teach to play football. We recruited the guy to be a PLAYmaker. All I heard during the offseason from these same pundits is that he is a truly special talent. It's clear that he is special, with great instincts and abilities. It's time to start making teams pay dearly for him. By this I mean throwing on 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th and 6th if they'd let us. Part of the reason the run struggles is because teams DO stack the box. Let's playaction that shite to death. Maybe if we start showing how often we're willing to throw, teams will back off and we'll be able rip off big runs. But to me it's clear that its in our receiving core where we have the biggest athletic advantage. This includes letting RS throw the ball.

When I think about RS, I think about 4 years ago the first time we played Tebow. He hadn't thrown the ball much yet before we played him, but when he did, he screwed us. I do believe letting RS throw is in the future against GA, FLA and the like, I just hope they do it right.

Overall I'd give today Offense C-, Defense B, Special Teams D(only because of Jones, otherwise F)

I think the people predicting we'll get rolled by Georgia are ridiculous. It'll probably be a close game, but I think LSU will bring more intensity and play better. Georgia certainly wasn't impressive tonite anyways. We knew long ago how hard beating FLA would be, Bama is starting to look that way. But Arky and Ole Piss are completely beatable.

***Keep an eye on the Tebow situation. If this really is his second concussion in 2 weeks, it could be a BIG deal. In the NFL this situation would lead to a QB being held out for WEEKS with an S.

Have to agree there. With this O-line we should be a pass first team. And though some are seeing doom I see a defense that is coming together pretty good.

Great analysis...on target points out good areas (yes there are some) and points out the bad stuff.

I agree with the others, good and sensible analysis.

Remember, though, that Georgia played in the rain last night so that game is a tougher read. Overall, they certainly aren't as good as last year.

And a final question, what are your thoughts about being under the center more to set up the play action?

This kinda depends on what has happened previously in a game and what their D is doing. If they are stacking the box, an under center playaction is great. If the blitz looks like its on, I'd like to see Jefferson skip the playaction, just drop back try and let a RB pick somebody up.

Basically I just think we have to try using the pass to set up the run.

However when its 1st and goal we just HAVE HAVE HAVE to find a way to run, even if its jefferson rolling out and getting yards.

Jefferson did miss the inside screen to Keiland last night on the drive where we missed the field goal, I believe. Good call, would have been an easy score, poor execution.

I agree with you that screens should be more of a staple for us, especially since the pass rush is getting to us fairly easily.

Kickoffs and KO returns were pretty good too.

I'd love to see Jefferson hit a TE on a blitz or even audible a WR on a short route, but I realize its not just like playing Dubs out there.

Agree 100% that we're a pass to set up the run team. If the box is constantly stacked, then we should kill over the top with Lafell and Toliver. When they finally start packing off, we may be more effective on the ground.

Seems obvious, doesn't it?

I know this won't be popular and the goal line stand was a thing of beauty...but...we are soft up the middle....Dixon 27 carries for 106yds....this may be the reason we can run the ball in practice so well but not in games...not to take anything away from Dixon...but he is not the best back we will face nor is Miss. States O-line the best we will face. They beat us everywhere but on the scoreboard and they had 4 turnovers....It's all a question of(not if) but when our luck runs out....this team has a long way to go.

I have been telling myself this every week, and it hasn't happened yet. How many more weeks of telling myself this before I should consider myself stupid?

The single most important line in this (very good) post. Our blockers are undersized, and do not seem very strong (esp the middle), so why do we continue to line up in the I formation like Charlie Mac and Charlie Peavy were still here? I don't pretend to be an expert in the spread, but isn't that a place where smaller, more athletic OL comes into it's own?

One other thought I posted during the game. Maybe because of the JL picks last year, we do not seem to be willing to use that large area between the two hash marks in our passing attack. I watch other teams, especially when they have large, physical WR and TE throwing quick slants, curls, middle screens, etc. but we repeatedly throw deep out patterns on the sidelines. The middle screen to KW at the goal line would have worked beautifully, but JJ threw it like a Russian deep snap and I think that was the play where Hitt was downfield? In any case, use the freaking middle of the field. Nothing slows a rush or jamming the line like a few completions right over their head.

This is a very good point. If you're talking about the same one I'm thinking of (on the goal line), that was six, no question. Keiland would have walked into the endzone.

In another red zone opportunity, JJ threw a good ball to Toliver that was open. Toliver caught it but ran his route out of bounds.

Just another example of single execution mistakes on offense screwing up the whole play.

I think that was another play. Screen was set up pretty nicely, but MSU did a good job of covering it. JJ threw it away. Unfortunately, the linemen had already taken off downfield. This is not a penalty in college football if the pass is thrown behind the line of scrimmage. But the the throw away was downfield.

This is exactly what teams are doing and exactly what we need to do to be more successful on offense. By passing the ball efficiently, we will open up the running gamem, not the other way around. Unless we have a proven QB, which at this time we do not, defenses will continue to sell out to stop the run.
