when LSU basketball was winning and the fans were filling up the Assembly Center (PMAC now). We use to say "Who dat talking bout beatin' dem Tigers, who dat, who dat?" I'm sure this has been posted before but this was my first recollection of it.

In 1973 my uncles summer league basketball team started the chant. One of em was bein recruited by lsu and thats how it got to lsu eventually.

uh no, my first Saints game in 79, they were chanting Who Dat

St. Augustine started it in the 70s. The LSU basketball team took it from them. The Saints were third to adopt it in the early 80s. I can tell you first hand that the Saints fans did not use Who Dat in the late 70s.

From wikipedia.....
Finally, "Who Dat" became part of a chant for fans cheering on their favorite team. It has been debated exactly where it started, but some claim it began with Southern University fans either in the late 1960's or early 70's and went "Who dat say dey gonna beat dem Jags" - Southern University being nicknamed the Jaguars. Another claim is that around the same time it began at St. Augustine High School, a historically African-American all boys Catholic high school in New Orleans, and then spread to the New Orleans Public Schools. Another claim is that the cheer originated at Patterson High School in Patterson, Louisiana (home of Saints running back Dalton Hilliard). In the late 70's fans at Louisiana State University picked up on the cheer. By 1983, the New Orleans Saints organization adopted it during the tenure of coach Bum Phillips. In 1981, the Cincinnati Bengals fans and players had started with their "Who Dey" cheer.[1] It was also adopted by wrestling fans of the Junkyard Dog, who wrestled locally in the Mid South Wrestling area in the early to mid 1980s.[citation needed]

It has been around since before any still living person on this planet was born(barring there are no immortal vampire types). It is from the 1880's or something.

I first heard it in the around 78 / 79 at LSU basketball games. This is before Saint fans adopted it. Saints fan did introduce " Cha Ching" from a hamburger joint commercial.

Andrew Jackson and his army started it in 1815 after the battle of New Orleans. As the British were running away back down the river they chanted "who dat, who dat, who dat say they gonna take new orleans!"

"Who dat" was being used at Alcorn State University in MS in the 1970s. I've read that it was being used at some NO high schools in the 1950s.
It did not start at LSU and it definitely did not start in Cincinnati.

OK douchebag, I have been going to Saints games since 1969 and also witnessed St. Aug using the chant as well as the 1981 LSU final four team. I know of what I speak. I used the link to wiki for douches like you who would call for a link. I don't give a shite if you believe any of what I am telling you, but it is the truth.

Who dat actually started in 1862, shortly after the Emancipation Proclamation.
A young uneducated former slave was heard saying "Who dat, who dat, who dat say dey gone beat dem slaves"

As others have stated, the "Who Dat" cheer was around way before LSU picked up on it in 1981...I used to hear it back in the late 60's, early 70's at high school football games so I'm sure it goes back further than that. Since it's known to have been a popular saying during the advent of Jazz, I could imagine it filtering into sports at a St. Aug or Southern as the stories go. But who the hell really knows?!!

I heard Al Gore invented it - right before he invented the World Wide InterWeb.
