Wedding Registry

So, we started our registry Saturday night. I thought it would be loads of fun, but it really just kind of stressed me out. We're not a super-young couple with "nothing". We've been in our house for several years, so we've got a pretty stocked kitchen.
I have not yet registered for China. Honestly, I wasn't going to register for "formal" dishes at all. We're not those people. We don't do formal. We love to host parties and entertain, but it's always very laid-back and casual. However, everyone is telling me to go for formal because "one day"...
And, honestly, if I ever have children, I'd like to have China to pass down (even though they'll likely think it's terribly ugly and outdated-one day it will again be en vogue).
I wanted to hear your suggestions for kitchen (or any other household) tools/appliances, etc.

My china has never come out of the box. I'd rather have multiple sets of fun dishes for whatever colors I'm in the mood for depending on the season.
My Mom has tons of china and has big dinner parties all the time. Rarely, does she use the china. She's go I don't know how many sets of other dishes that she uses. She likes to mix and match with fun colors, as well. I am my mother's daughter.
I'd get Cutco knives and register there if they have a registry. I love mine and they are guaranteed for life, so you can send them back if anything happens, though I've not had a problem. They replaced an entire set of steak knives and other knives for my friends whose knives got cruddy in Katrina. Made me like the ocmpany even more.

We got china that was overall pretty plain. My wife's idea was that we could dress it up with other things on the table.
We don't use our china that often, but I do think it's something good to have. Make sure it's dishawasher/microwave safe, or it will get used even less.
After that, maybe just ask for cash/gift cards? Or if you don't have things like a gumbo pot or crawfish cooker, you could register for that.

I'm not a fan of the practice of registering for china too....I'm not formal, love to entertain, but why have dishes that are never used because they might get broken to pull out at Christmas or for an anniv....just a waste of perfectly good gifts.
I echo knives, good blender if you like mixed drinks, nice coffee maker, juicer, pots and pants (good ones).

You have some legit concerns.
I have fine china/crystal/silverware, every day Correlle, and all kinds of fun serving pieces, I will say I use a mix of all though out the year.
For the first few years of marriage the fine stuff never made it out of the storage boxes because I was waiting on the “one day”. I got tired of waiting on “one day” and now about once a month I will “set” the actual formal dining room table for dinner. I also have young children and they love when I set a “fancy” table just because. And if one gets broken---it happens—get over it—it is just a dish!
I concure on the Cutco—they are good knives and good price.
Go with some good cookware, coffee grinder,gumbo/stock pot, every day cookware, bake sheets, storage containers, cutting boards, large tongs, spatulas, spoons ect…
You like to entertain— lots of platters for serving, fun glasses. Don’t forget the bathrooms---fun hand towels, candles, cool art to hang on the walls.
Bread machine makes for easy pre-work for rolls, a small food processor, hand held mixer, a blender for frozen drinks, a deep fryer and good gas grill top off my choices.

If you don't have tervis tumblers, I'd add those to the list. I love mine and they also guaranteed for life. Send then in if they chip or whatever and they send new ones. I haven't had to, but I just found some really old ones which need to be traded it, just because they have a few teeny weeny cracks. I think they are 15 years old or close to it. Bed, Bath and Beyond carries them. I like them monogrammed.

We got a beverage chiller for Christmas this year- chills a bottle of wine in 6 minutes. It's really cool.

I've never seen our china, it's still in the box and I didn't go with my wife to register.

I got plain white china (Wedgewood) and I still love it 15 years later. I use it several times a year. It's easier to use when it's not in a box in the attic. I still love my everyday dishes, too, and have only broken one plate. I use the crystal pretty much every day.
We got a lot of gadgets (bread maker, juicer, etc.) as wedding gifts that have gathered dust in the dark recesses of the pantry, but I use the heck out of a crock pot, a good Dutch oven and cast iron skillets. And, you may only use it once a year, but an ice cream maker is fun to have. Homemade ice cream just makes people happy.
