Trading Chris Paul... Should Bower Consider now?

Darren Collison is playing darn good ball as a rookie. Who knows if CP will resign with the team and it will only become a LBJ/DW type situation with the player hanging it over the organization's head.
If we can trade CP for a star 2 or 3 player plus maybe another piece... I think i'd be all for it. One idea is like Danny Granger and Tyler Hansbrough. I don't know if it works but just to get the idea. Brandon Roy is another player. I know CP is a star but I think the hornets will be better off getting other parts to our team. We'll have over 20 million expiring payroll after next season so trading CP... maybe even Trading Peja's contract for some talent... I think this could go a long ways for our organization.

I vote no. CP3 is the face of the Hornets organization and does a lot of good for the community. I would hope Hornets management would find some players to compliment CP3. I would love to see Bosh here but that is doubtful.

I can't believe how many people are turning no cp3 for no reason except he's hurt. They are a better taem with him. having 2 guards would be huge...because when D.C. or Paul come off..it's a huge drop off..wouldnt it be nice to always have one on the floor?
He's our most popular player...Olympian, allstar...and people just want to get rid of him. I'll never understand it.

I can't think of a reason why the hornets should get rid of CP3. I mean why when there are so many more players on that roster that should be or should have been gotten rid of already. The need some players surrounding Paul. I agree that Collison is good, but do you really think building a franchise around him is the answer?

Yes it would be nice but it'd also be nice to have one with a star wing player to compliment them.

We wouldn't be building it around DC necessarily. We would be building it around the player we acquire for CP. And trading CP is on the table IMO because its arguable that our 2nd best player could be a backup next year. CP is our most valuable commodity and if we could get some fortunes to compliment our shaky roster, we could do very well next year especially since Peja's expiring contract will be pretty valuable as well.

I really think you have to see what happens in the draft first before making any moves outside of dumping Okafor or Posey. Get a starting caliber athletic big in the draft and trade DC for a young starting caliber 2/3 and you've surrounded CP3 with a good core. Hit on the next draft and you'd have a solid starting 5 and bench and move from a 6-8 seed to a 3-4 seed. And that would all be before Paul's option year which based on the current direction of the salary cap, may be more than he'd get on the open market.

exactly. i see where people are coming from when it comes to trading paul; pick up multiple players, maybe another all-star, shed some bad contracts etc. However to win an nba championship you have to have a top 6-7 guy as your best player. So if we trade paul we better make sure we get someone else who is a top 6-7 player or we get a player who might crack the echelon within a year or two

Didnt' the lakers without Kobe hav a good stretch revently? Why not trade Kobe? He's getting a little older....lot of miles...and you're winning without him..get some good young talent!
Doesn't make sense does it.
Trading Paul is not the answer the Hornets are looking for..unless that answer is the Hornets moving cities

Comparing Kobe to CP...
You bring up Kobe... how many championships has he won and who was their point guard...? You're solidifying my point IMO.

You keep CP and you trade David West and Peja. Will not get much for them but we need to dump there contracts

Great, so we'd have CP and two bags of chips with our 2nd best player on the bench. At least we'd get a star player package in return for Chris Paul.

if we want to win a championship with paul we should model the team after the 80's pistons. they are the only team to have a point guard as their top player and be a legit contenter. Well except for the lakers and magic but that doesnt count bc magic was a freak

How long is DCs contract for?
It's very hard to speculate on this now, because you don't know what DC is thinking. Obviously, if DC has plans to turn his success into a starting gig somewhere besides New Orleans, then you need CP. I'd love to see them both on the team, but if I had to bet, I'd say DC looks to leave when he can.

And for the record, I'd be for trading Collison as well... we certainly wouldn't get as much for him but it'd be nice to transfer that value to another position of need for us.

I see you keep talking about positions of need. Do you not think a good backup PG is a position of need? I understand that a starting 2 > backup 1 in terms of need, but why trade a need for a need? We've seen numerous times, that when CP is on the bench, the team goes to shite most of the time. Will a good starting 2 fix that problem?

Lots of top teams from that era were point guard driven, but they also had toughness down low. Even the Hornets of 2 years ago are a model. I liked the Okafor trade because Tyson was done, but if he had been healthy you never make that deal. That's why this draft, which is supposedly deep in 6'10+ PF/C types, is so important.

You are answering your own question.
a player we depend on for 38 minutes a game is a higher priority than that of one who plays for 10 minutes a game.
