Dumb Question if Containment Dome works...

How are they ever supposed to permanently fix the problem if the dome is covering the leak? Are they able to fix problem at a different point cutting off oil from leaking there?

They are going to drill into the well from the side to plug it up.

So basically their permanent solution is to Plug up the pipe? Could that lead to deterioration and eventually busting again from pressure?

Going to plug the well.

Not if done properly, this is done all the time on wells.

In a few years they will probably build a new rig over the plugged pipe and begin pumping again. They will not let that bed of oil go to waste.

You need to educate yourself a little more.
This well was never pumping.
They will not build anything on location. If something is built it will be built elsewhere and floated to location.

your right I have no clue. and when they float a new rig out there where will it be put? Probably nowhere close to the current location right?

I don't see why not.

I would suspect they would tap into the well at one of the locations of where they are drilling the relief wells.
They may never put an actual facility in place. This could turn into subsea production with it just being pumped to another facility.

I was being sarcastic.

i know you're being sarcastic, but it's not that simple. w/ a subsea development, you have some options. you can have a couple of wells sitting next to each other on the sea floor (a drill center) then tie them in via flowline to an existing structure. if they elect to bring out a new production facility to produce the field, the actual surface location of the spar may be several miles away from the actual wells in order to take advantage of more favorable water depth, subsea terrain, or to get closer to an existing sales pipeline network.
and they will never return to this particular well for production. this particular well will be permanently abandoned by using the relief well. it's highly unlikely the relief well will ever be made into a producer either, but not knowing the profile of the well, i can't say for sure.
if they elect to develop the field, i'm sure the drill center would be quite a ways away from this exact site in order to avoid the myriad of debris on the seafloor.

Agreed, they may reenter and sidetrack out of the relief well to get some use out of it but more than likely they if they decide to develop this field they will drill new wells.

they are drilling to different points.
this dome is a temp fix to convey the oil to a ship.
as soon as practical they will redo the well at another point and be able to use that natural gas and oil from the discovery.
its one of the largest ever. they are not walking away.
They will never stop trying to get this well working.
I just hope they let the cement cure a couple of weeks before running the process full-on again.
