Spill Could Shut Down LOOP Next Week

Oil spill could reach US port for foreign oil
VENICE, La. -- Oil gushing from a blown-out well at the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico could force closure of the Louisiana Offshore Oil Port next week, authorities said Friday
The port, known as LOOP, is a platform off the Louisiana coast about 80 miles southwest of New Orleans. It is one of the leading facilities for imported oil, handling up to 1.2 million barrels a day and feeding half the nation's refinery capacity.
"It definitely could be shut down if the heavy oil gets in the vicinity of the platform," Sittig said.
An Associated Press team saw a heavy band of putrid, orange and rust-colored oil snake its way into the LOOP security zone Thursday about 30 miles off Grand Isle. LOOP has a heavily guarded security zone. The AP team was not allowed to enter the security zone, which is patrolled by security ships.

this shite will be megabad for BP (and us) if this well is unfixable without a relief well and things like this continue to be the result.

1.2m bbls. a day wouldn't feed the plants in La.

I think you are confusing LOOP with the Strategic Oil Reserve
It does pass through salt domes, but it is kind of a revolving door into pipelines rather than a true storage.

This is what happens when you have writers putting things they read in their own words.
It feeds half, but a more accurate way of putting it is that it connects to the pipeline system that connects to half of the nation's refining capacity.

True.......
Ships are gauged once loaded, then once again once it gets to the port. Years ago ships had boilers, they could adjust the boiler to run almost anything ( Crude, asphalt, diesel, etc.), some would get caught stealing the cargo that they were hauling.

Thought it was cool to see Tahiti specified (very familar with the project and have had a "behind the scenes" look on it from concept, design, subsystem testing, assembly, deployment, and now production).
But I have to question what it is that I
am actually looking at. You telling me we have crude pipelines to Houston but not Baton Rouge?
Or that this shows only Shell owned lines and another company (probably Exxon) has that connection built.

Sometimes Shell lines may run along Exxon pipelines. This has been done through the years. Many projects are done in a partnership. Many companies each taking a % of ownership.

At one time, BTR area received Hawkins Crude from Tx., Crude from Mississippi, etc.
