Any word on how the beaches are there at the moment?

But seriously, I know you asked specically about Destin, here is a cam of the pier at Fort Walton, should give you a pretty good idea of the conditions in the area.
Ft. Walton cam
There is also a cam at the Lucky Snapper in Destin, but I don't think you can gather as good of an idea of the conditions from that one as you can from this one.

Earlier today I talked to a friend who is in San Destin right now. He said there is no oil on the beaches other than a few small tar balls. His kids have been swimming in the gulf and playing on the beaches all week.
He also said there are far fewer people on the beaches than usual. The threat of oil has scared people away.

Destin seems about half full. There's no traffic jams and no waiting for a table at any resturants. Beach was fairly crowded today after the rain stopped. A few tarballs at Sandestin. They seemed to come in little flurries then subside. Waves were 5-7 feet, but that didn't stop the tourist from getting in the water. The rain is a bigger bummer than the oil, but all in all, not a bad place to be.

This is pretty bizarre because I saw the Doobie Brothers in Lafayette a few years ago and they misspelled the name on the tickets....what did it say on the tickets?.....you guessed it:
The Dobbie Brothers
I still have my ticket stub with misspelled name.

We waited 45 minutes for a table last night at P.F. Changs. But the waiter said that usually at this time year there is a two hour wait. For lunch today, there was only a 5 minute wait at Fudpuckers. I agree that the rain is a bigger bummer than the pieces of dried up(until you smush it) oil that's all over the beach at Sandestin. We just try to walk around it, and we've had no problem finding a clean spot to park our chairs and ice chest. But the waves are huge and the sound of the surf is awesome - and we haven't had to worry about sunburn. So, I agree its a great place to be!

what's the best way to get the tar balls/oil off of you if it gets on you?

That Conrad was a piece of work for sure... not really familiar with the other one(s), though.
