1911 question

What's everyone's opinion on the different manufacturers who produce 1911s?
I'm partial to my Sig P226, and I'd like to shoot the Sig 1911, are there any other makers I should be looking at?
And don't say Les Bauer or Wilson's as I'm not looking to drop that kind of change.

I have the Springfield GI model and I'm in love with it. You can find them for $500.00 or less. My only negative is that I have a hard time seeing the front sight in a low light/indoor range environment b/c it is not a contrasting color.
I know I could put some white or orange paint on it but I want to keep it old school/WWII style.

I got a Springfield Mil=Spec 1911 a few months ago. shoots real smooth and great quality. I would avoid Kimber, and Colt is too expensive for what you get. If you're looking on the super cheap I hear Rock Island Armory's Tactical model isn't bad for the price.
To the guy with the G.I. model, those come with "low profile" sights. you can always change them out if its that big an issue.

to add another question, is there any difference between the different makes of 1911s? I have always wondered that. What makes one better than another?
This might be a hijack, but what is the draw for the 1911 besides nostalgia? 1911 noob here.

I've shot two in my life, the first was a Springfield Armory, and it was an absolute nail driver. I was shooting a .40 Glock at the time, and my groupings with the 1911 were like night and day to my glock groupings.
Last summer I had the privilege to shoot a 1911 manufactured and assembled by the Singer sewing machine company during WWII. It belonged to my great uncle and was his sidearm throughout his tour in the pacific theater. I was told it had blood on it.
Fact of the matter was, that 60+ year old pistol fired true, and I produced another tight grouping.
That's what piqued my interest in them.

I love my kimber. My buddy has the springfield GI model listed above and loves it too. He carries it pretty regularly. He headshot a doe with it out of a tree climber last year.

The frame and look of the gun is pretty universal.
everything else is able to be modified...the barrel..the trigger..the hammer...the grips.the clips..the safety...And each gun maker uses their own types of materials. Example A sig trigger is not the same trigger as on the Springfield or the Colt or the Kimber...

For those posters who are willing to spend that much money, they should be looking at Ed Brown and Valtro, and be willing to be put on a waiting list for their pistols.
