well of course there are tons and tons of options. i lived in NYC the past two winters. here's a short version of the advice i can offer:
Food: Strip House is the best steak I ever had in NYC. restaurant is also great atmosphere for romantic date. But, again, there are tons of great restaurants. I'm sure you'll get plenty of food feedback.
Stay Away From: Times Square. especially at night and if you're staying for New Year's.
Shopping: SoHo is best place to take the wife. Stop and have lunch at Ed's Lobster Bar while you're shopping. It's pretty awesome.
Fun/Entertainment: Ice-Skating at Rockefeller is a fun touristy thing to do. Walk around/take carriage ride around Central Park. Even though it's cold if there is snow on the ground the park is beautiful.

As someone who has been to NYC probably a hundred times, and several times during the week before Christmas, one piece of advice I will give you is: learn the subway system. NYC at Christmas time is beautiful, special, and crowded as frick. Hotels are at capacity, cabs are virtually impossible to get, and everything is a struggle. If you are depending on cabs to get you around, plan on leaving an hour before you need to be somewhere. It's nuts.
What kind of food do you like, and how much do you want to spend?

thanks for the advice...I just want to show her a good time...we are spending 3 days there so we won't get to do everything but she has always wanted to go to NYC during Christmas. I'm trying to use priceline.com to get a good hotel in Manhattan.
Planning on going to soho to let her shop, China-town, central park, ground zero, etc. Just looking for some "hidden gems" when it comes to restaurants.

If you're gonna be there at Christmas time, make a plan to do some window shopping.. Sak's, Bergdorff Goodman, Barney's all have incredible window displays at Christmas, so stroll down 5th Avenue, beginning around Bergdorf's and walk South.. By all means check out Rockefeller Plaza.. and if the observatory deck is open at Top of the Rock, it's a great view.. There's also a restaurant in Sak's 5th Ave if you want to catch a locals only place with a great view of Rockefeller Center.. Their soups are very good.

If you guys are going to 5th ave, etc. to check out the christmas decorations at the shops, make sure you go at night. The lights are fantastic. My wife was the same way and, once I took her up there, she's on me every year to go back at that time.

I went in January right after new years. Times Square was the only place I felt uncomfortable. This coming from a guy that grew up in new orleans. TS was very shady. There isn't a whole lot to see there except the lights, or if you want to go to Dave & Busters or Red Lobster.
Il Vagabondo was a great find. It's in the upper east side. It's Italian, and Emeril said they have the best Veal Parm he's ever had. If you want traditional Italian, I'd check this place out. Casual atmosphere and great food.

Was there a few years ago for Christmas/New Years
Agree with everything everyone has already said regarding Times Square, Subways, etc...
One of the best meals I had there (and ever probably) was at Nobu.

There are too many great places to eat in NYC to in 10 trips, much less 1 trip. Can't wait to go back up...

this is surprising to me.. seems like that would be the area with highest security.
